I just hate it when people go "DON'T SAY THAT!".
First off, ret*d means slow, mentally ret*d means mentally slow, which is the same as stupid. Which means saying "THATS SO ret*d" and "THATS SO STUPID" is the same thing. It does NOT mean Mentally Challenged or Learning Disabled. It means Stupid. Yet, people go "THATS OFFENSIVE" and "I HAVE SOMEONE IN MY FAMILY WITH SPECIAL NEEDS, DON'T SAY THAT!".

If ret*d = Stupid and if people think ret*d = Learning Disabled, then to them, Learning Disabled = Stupid!
And they think the WORD offends us?!?

I hate political correctness and idiots who get offended by anything.

I don't think people associate learning disabilities with mental retardation. When I've heard someone respond to "that's ret*d" by saying that they have someone in their family special needs, it is generally a family member with mental retardation.
And the point is really that you are taking a term that is description of a group of people and using it as an insult. When you say, "That's ret*d," it is usually meant as lame, or unlikeable, or a dumb idea. No wonder people with mental retardation and their families are offended by the use of "ret*d"- the implication is that "retardation" implies something that is lesser than something else or an inherently undesirable state. It's the same when people use the word "gay" to mean something that they don't like.

The word ret*d(to stop/slow down) or ret*d(stopped or slowed down) does NOT mean stupid! Mentally ret*d, which some reduce to ret*d and some idiots say ret*d means stupid, unless referring to an AREA of specialty, where it refers only to that area. Got that?

SAnd SLOW doesn;t mean dumb in a real sense. The one that completes a test first is not necessarily the smartest. The one that takes the longest isn;t necessarily the dumbest. Does that make sense to you?

And if someone is mentally ret*d, hopefully they will try to find a spot where it doesn't affect their independence and, they will, HOPEFULLY, try to improve. Hey, how many have an IQ of 500? That IS a rhetorical question, by the way. In a way, EVERYONE is ret*d. It all depends on your point of reference. There are things I can do that you may not be able to. The reverse may well be true as well. The area I found is where I can be rightfully respected and live a nice life. I try to improve my weak areas, and am happy. THAT is what matters to me.

I've been trying to point that out for years but people are too stupid to listen. They can say the same about me.

But yet if I remember correctly, mentally ret*d is a medical diagnosis for a person having less than 70 IQ.

And to be honest, I toss the word around quite a bit, just to make people think about things a little deeper... And I then give examples of mentally ret*d people who have done things most average intelligence people aren't capable of comprehending. Like installing an OS. Most normal people can't comprehend how to do it, but yet a mentally ret*d person I know figutred it out entirely on her own... Looks ike IQ really doesn't mean anything...

dont use the word too much around here, you'll get a warning :]

i didnt even know it was such a bad word, im not an english speaker. i thought it simply meant... "stupid"

maybe thats why black eyed pea's song "let's get ret*d" had to be changed to "let's get it started" :S

It isn't just about political correctness - it is about medical incorrectness. Retardation is also a diagnosed condition.

The use of the word 'ret*d' is not ret*d, it's just a bit... delayed. ^^

Isn't there a term in Physics called 'retardation', too?

It's an overused word and a tired, worn out cliche. Why can't people be a bit more creative in their insults? Maybe they are _______ (don't wanna type it. It might offend)

It's almost the same as how "gay" is used as an insult as in "that's so gay!"
I have a friend who is gay that uses that all the time.

Again, so were moron, imbecile, and idiot once upon a time. So it shifts meaning; who cares?

The great thing about terms for people society looks down on is they constantly acquire a negative connotation, so you always need new ones.
