Feb 1 article in Bangor (Maine) Daily news reports that a FEDERAL judge has ruled that a girl with ASp is entitled to spec ed even though she completes homework, behaves in class and scores well on tests.
As a sixth grader, she stopped studying and attempted suicide. She was consequently diagnosed by a psychiatrist with Asperger's Syndrome and "depressed mood". The school denied services because of lack of impact on academic progress. The judge overturned the decision which the child's lawyer says recognizes that social development is an important part of education.

The same question occurs to me. I was put in a SPecial EDucation class in high school and my grades and self-esteem suffered. Plus I got really, REALLY tired of being called a "sped." Sped=ret*d to most people. Of course, given a choice between that and "poindexter"--I got called that for a whole week at camp because I committed the "thoughtcrime" of bringing books with me. Fun!

While this girl was obviously going through Hell, I'm not sure that putting her in special education will help her with her self-esteem or emotional troubles. Also, there was one question that wasn't answered in the article: is this what she wants? Or is it what her parents want?

It's not so much as being in special ed as getting the services she needs.

She should be in a school that provides the help and attenion she needs school systems will fight this with everything they have becuse it costs money we went though all this with our son even paying out of pocket for his nerouphych getting an advocate and having lots paperwork at his IEP to the point the system caved and provided alternate schooling. Wanting and needing to be in some type of special ed are not the same her regular ed wasnt going so well so why not give it a try
