Au contraire! A judge has ruled that the Sea Shepherds -are- pirates. They are (in the legal sense) pirates and they can be dealth with as pirates. Keel-hauled and then hanged from the highest yardarm. Or at least shot dead or harpooned.

I really wish that Japan just quit whaling already. Not many people care about it in Japan really. It only matters to those 330 people who are the employees of The Institute of Cetacean Research and those who work on the ships. Yes, it is true that they sell the whale meat domestically, which is completely legal by The International Whaling Commission (IWC)'s regulations. But whale meat is very rare and I've never eaten or seen it sold in stores. And all the profit from the sale goes right back to funding the research and it is not even sufficient so that the Japanese government has to supplement the rest. The government even gave a part of the tsunami relief funds, which I think is total bullsh*t.
Anyway, if Japan stops whaling, that's one less thing for those anti-Japan people to bash Japan about and Paul Watson and his rich celebrity supporters can go pick on someone else.

About the word 'Jap', I looked it up on wikipedia and it says it is not offensive everywhere. Perhaps the Australian poster did not mean to cause offense? I don't know how it is in Australia, but apparently a news service over there uses the term.
In Dutch it is used to refer to the Japanese concentration camps in Asia, 'jappenkampen'.

Did you really read her post? Only the people with ill feeling towards the Japanese use that word. I am Japanese and it is very offensive to me. I guess Wikipedia is not always right.

There is at least one other Australian poster who made racist comments about the Japanese. What's up with that? The Japanese people in general love Australia. And Japan is Australia's biggest beef export market. Why all this hate?

I know there is one Japanese poster on this site who lives in Australia but he never explicitly says that he is Japanese. I wonder if that's because having lived in Australia, he's learned that it is better to hide his background to avoid racists.

Eh, well, there are idiots everywhere I guess. Some people in America still think WWII is going on. And besides, it's not like some Japanese aren't xenophobic as well, although it has gotten better in recent years. My friend Kyuuchan is majoring in International Studies with a minor in Japanese language, and I've been interested in their culture for the longest time thanks to my aunt Yuriko and my cousin. They married into the family by way of my uncle, who is white but spent a lot of time overseas in the past. I despise racism in general, but I take slurs toward the Japanese personally due to the family connection.

That said, Yuzu, do you actually live in Japan or are you overseas? Just curious. Also, where did you get your username? I remember there being a Yuzu from SMT Devil Survivor, she was an awesome character.

But I'm getting off topic, so if you want to chat please PM me. I'd like to know more about you but not at the expense of the conversation at hand.

I always wondered why when watching Whale Wars, I just couldn't sympathize with the Sea Shepard, and tended to sympathize with the whalers. And I love whales.....I really do.

During the first season of Whale Wars, I was quickly appalled by the Sea Shepherds actions for three reasons:

1) I tend to have a strong respect for private property and private property rights. What the Sea Shepherds was doing showed a complete lack of respect for anything but their own egos. As far as they were concerned, rules don't apply to themselves.

2) Their seamanship is horrific. They are going out with inexperienced crews and putting them in hazardous situations. It's a wonder they haven't killed members of their own crews.

3) They are complete liars. They twist and turn everything in their own favor. Nothing is their fault. In reality, I don't believe anything that they have to say -- they have no credibility at all because of all the lies they have told.

Since then, everything has just confirmed all three of those issues and there has been absolutely nothing to the contrary.

There are real conservation organizations out there that are equally appalled with the Sea Shepherds and would like to see their operations ended forever. At least one of them complains that what the Sea Shepherds are doing is giving their entire movement a black eye.

I think you're right. But she did mention Pearl Harbor for some reason.

Probably because she saw that dumb Ben Affleck film.

The Sea Shepherds have given being an eco-phreak a bad name.

And now they have been identified as the criminals and outlaws they are. It is legit to use deadly force on them. A few well placed harpoons in the torso should teach them valuable lessons.

If people want to eat or sell whale meat as a rare expensive delicacy I seriously don't see the problem unless they are driving them to extinction.

I can't be sure but it's not as expensive as the Japanese beef. It's just hard to come by, and it's hardly delicacy. But I'm sure it is a lot healthier than the steroid and growth hormone laden imported beef.

I think some Japanese people are still clinging to the hope to restart whaling commercially, so they don't have to depend on the imported meat so much. But IWC will never allow that to happen. So they should just give up all together or just limit whaling within near sea at least. It's just not worth all the international bashing.

I do not agree with the decision to partly fund so called whale research from Money donated to the tsunami recovery. How can this be justified maybe Japanese scientists think that whales cause tsunami's ahhhhhh that must be it.

Maybe they wanted to help the starving tsunami victims with some tasty whale meat?

maybe Japan should not enter Australian waters or internationally protected whale sancturies.
I think all the money raised for tsunami by the international community should be used to rebuild damage and lives of those affected not for protection of WHALE RESERCH.
