In the early morning hours of 12/22, a shirtless, barefoot teen with autism was found crossing the Broadway Bridge in Portland, Oregon. Police tasered said teen after he did not respond to their commands. According to the police report, the said he was "high on drugs" and was "physically intimidating." This is the third time police officers were involved in assaulting an unarmed citizen. In September of 2005, police murdered a young man who was in serious need of medical attention. A year later, police murdered James Chasse, a schziopherenic homeless man because he was simply homeless. Now, tasering an autistic person is enough. I will not be surprised if a "cop killer" starts showing up. I mean, who would miss a racist, sexist, anti-citizen killer who would shoot first & talk later?

As one with Aspergers, I would like to find a card that tells authorities about AS.

You can always make your own card. In fact, I got stopped by a cop over a month ago for having an expired license plate tag and was so nervous that I had to work extra hard to follow the cop's directions.

Remember, when the police flash the lights (even if there's no sound) right behind or next to you, pull over to the right and do not get out of the car unless you're asked to. Otherwise, the cop will get nervous that you're going to attack him/her and he/she may pull out a gun towards you.

While I know some of you know this, others on here may not or forget to follow these directions. That's an important safety tip for anyone with an ASD to know. I'm not attempting to scare anybody; just trying to help out.

I think the police reacted correctly.. One of the articles say he was carrying a metal pole and was charging at them... He is also a very big guy and bigger than I was at his age and I was bigger than most adults. If he had've got at the police he would be capable of overpowering 2 average officers. He was lucky that they had a tazer.

I agree it's not reasonable to ask police to diagnose people with autism on the fly, but I do think it is inappropriate for them to use any type of force unless a person shows aggressive behavior toward them (unless, of course, the officer has just witnessed the person commit an act of violence against someone else, or break into someone's house or something).

The problem seems to be that police (and many other people as well) tend to associate weird behavior with a person being dangerous. This perception of "mentally odd=violent" seems to happen whether the people have a psychiatric disorder or are high on drugs, neither of which automatically make a person violent.

I've heard of similar stories of this nature and can tell you I'm not fond of this fact by any means.Realistically there is no way any singular person could identify someone as being Autistic esp.. Police whereabouts proper responses could be utilized i.e. humane treatment when dealing with persons whom are Autistic. Well, I,myself try to follow the ground rules cause even when I had been in an auto accident several years ago it was most distressing trying to explain what happened to the officer taking the report.

I close with saying that, I hope better handling of such issues can be done a hell-alot better in the future.
