"bigger picture" my patootie it is not generally a good long-term idea to bargain with the devil. I have no words for this madness.

It's stuff like this makes me wonder why do we still have troops there.
Our prolonged stay there has done nothing to change their barbaric ways.
Our military is experiencing similar problems with sexual assault on the rise.
And all Obama cares about is putting gays in charge of everything in the military.

I think they are not allowed to interfere with local culture/customs.

how can we expect those soldiers to just stand by when they are often within earshot of screaming boys having new ones torn in them? if that is the case we should get the hell out of there, IMHO. "bigger picture" my foot.

if you read the link you will note that two soldiers who disobeyed the orders are in the process of being punished via UCMJ.

That's "normal" behavior over there.

It's pretty much a living monument of something like Sparta (yes, they liked their little boys and had a similar homoerotic male-dominated culture).

it is a normal we as a nation should avoid by getting the hell out of that hellhole.

This is where moral relativism comes in.

I'm sure there's many things we do that they find abhorrent that are entirely innocuous to us, let alone frowned upon but still given tacit approval.

Ironically, I think the Taliban [and Al-Q] do such far less than the allied Pashtuns. Kinda funny, really (if it wasn't so sad).

My GP was a special forces medic that was over there.

He pretty much said the same thing regarding their...medieval way of life. Though, I say they're further back than that (I'm pretty sure "we" weren't that bad in the medieval period). I say like the Ancient Greeks crossed with various African/South American tribes.

They have law and government, but it's...remarkably savage.

IMHO we shoulda listened to good ol' George Washington and stayed outta them danged foreign entanglements.
