There's already been progress towards unification. The Olympics team and the work towards railway lines across the borders. North Korea will need some assurances. The US are the main obstacle.
What do unification even mean for Korea? South Korean peoples will never accept been governed by the North Korean regime and losing their freedom and prosperity, while the North Korean government will never accept to lose their power.
What is blocking the unification is not the US, this is the ideological incompatibility between both Korean governments, and this is not some token gestures that will change that.

In 2016, we were told by the 'experts' that Trump was a blood-thirsty madman, itching for war. There was a TV add for Clinton showing a hot headed Trump with his finger on the button. Mushroom clouds! He was supposed to start WW3 with Russia, Iran and North Korea by now.
Apparently, the narrative has shifted and we're now being told by that Trump is 'coddling up' to dictators, that he's trying too hard to be friendly, that he's going to roll over and allow the U.S. to be taken advantage of.
Experts indeed.
If President Obama had stepped into NK, he would have received a 2nd Nobel Peace Prize, and a bust on Mount Rushmore.
Yet Trump seem to really want a war with Iran.
