That free meal program is not what it used to be.

Item 1) I am 42 and grew up in extreme poverty. When I was in school I got free lunches and my goodness they were fantastic. Maybe not gourmet quality, but diner quality food, and plenty of it. I loved it. If I could go back in time now and get a tray I would.

Item 2) I am no longer poor, but I live in a district where the schools give all the children free lunches so the poor kids are not singled out (a great idea, I think). My five year old has just started school this year (pre-K, summer school). An example of the free lunch is 4 child sized nuggets, an apple, and a cup of white milk. Most children, mine included, will not eat most fruit and vegetables. So what happens is he can’t eat the free lunch. Four nuggets and milk is not enough for his lunch. The teacher told me to pack his lunch every day. Many of the other children are also doing this, and all this food is being thrown away. I mean, I guess. I don’t know where it goes when the children don’t eat it.

That program needs to be changed so the poor kids get a full belly again. At the very least, spend that money on something else for the kids.

Hopefully since obviously the last administration didn't.

I can't believe how much better the lunches have gotten since I went to school.

I absolutely refused to eat the lunches they made in my junior high (which cost 50 cents).

Diner quality? More like "mystery meat" quality.

Whatever the last administration did or didn't do has no bearing on the current administration's contempt and lack of concern for the poor.

Just another one of the GOP's screw the poor plans.

The only thing these nutjob "conservatives" want to conserve is their precious "free market," something that has never existed and never will.

I'm no socialist, but what's the point of all this wealth if we can't provide basic necessities to our citizens?

BaronHarkonnen85 and I agree on something?!

8O Except for that "Free Market" stuff.

There must have been more to last night's "Black Moon" event than what the scientists are letting on...

When I was growing up I never received free lunches in school. There was no such thing. I was sort of envious of those students that received cafeteria lunches that their parents paid for. We were not a wealthy family, just a large family with 8 children. We always sacked our own lunches. But I have very mixed feeling about the free lunch program at school. My wife worked in the cafeteria at school. Generally many, many students but not all who received free lunches at school throw most of the food away in the trash. It wasn't that the food was not healthy or nutritious, it was really that the students were not hungry nor starving. They had extra pocket money to buy treats out of the vending machines. So I really hate waste. Free lunches at school is a good program for those truly in need. But the problem is that many receiving these benefits are not truly in need.
