in 1974, in the 8th grade our school made us watch a film about the holocaust that was quite graphic, we kids were dumbfounded and slack-jawed, a few laughed nervously, i think one cried. the teacher did not know what to say, she was just as unprepared as the rest of us, and this lack of preparation was harmful.

I didn’t say 8th grade. I said high school.

I was shown the graphic films in the summer before going into 7th grade. It made me sick.

Its amusing how unprepared teachers were back in the 1970s. We were made to watch the movie Tootsie with Dustin Hoffman and I could hear some my prudish catholic school teachers gasp in shock when Hoffman appeared in drag

Yeah.
That is a great way to get beaten up at school, if you are part German.

Unfortunately true.
German language is still triggering for many Poles - but this can at least have some justification in the past events.
However, it can get totally over the top. My friend's mother was bullied at school for... having a Polish last name refering to a region in Germany 8O

Yeah. That was a bit strong for unprepared kids that age, being taught by an unprepared teacher. The school system was rather negligent.

But as Krafty said maybe later in age kids should be exposed to it. And we did see movies with some clips of the death camps later in highschool.

I totally separate “German” from “Nazi.”

The German people I have met are far away from the Nazi stereotypes.

We have to teach young people about the Truth of the Holocaust. And make sure to emphasize that the vast majority of the German people wouldn’t have embraced the Nazi genocidal ideology.

It should be remembered that a German woman gave the Beatle haircut to the Beatles.

So I was psychologically abused, as a 4 year old, for speaking German, for no good reason?

I’m terribly sorry that happened to you.

I was psychologically abused many times for no good reason.

One could be psychologically abused at any age, on any pretext.

I’m not nearly as good a flirt as you are.

You were abused at...four years of age...for speaking German?

By whom?

Other four year olds?

How is it that you were so learned that you could speak German at four years of age?

And how is it that your four year old peers were so learned that they knew about and had even a crude understanding of the two world wars and the Holocaust at four years of age?
