I have yet to see it.

The scenarios of both The Day After[i]and [i]Threads leading up to nuclear war were plausible at the time. My first reaction to the illogical premise of The Civil War was like yours. Then I remembered that I rewatched The Day After and Threads and other cold war era nuclear apocalypse films in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Sure, the run ups to nuclear war are dated but that did not effect the power of those films I had seen at the time and those I was seeing for the first time.

But I am a baby boomer who does remember the cold war era deep fear that either I would go to sleep never to wake up or wake up to such an altered world that I wished I had not woken up. Those old films did bring those feelings right back. Younger generations have no internal memory of those times but do have plenty of current reasons for dread.

Those old films were message films. As nerve racking as the run up and nuke scenes were their true power was the aftermath of total nuclear war scenes. From what I'm have read Civil War centers on the reporters.

Agreed! I saw it last night. Gripping, graphic, journalistic behaviour exposed in all it’s disturbing glory.

Can anyone comment who would fight who?

In my experience the US is very diverse, to have a war you need contiguous... something like ethnicity or ideology.
The US is like a hydra with many billionaires, private militias, govt agencies...

I don't think a civil war is feasible.

Personally I think a modern Civil War in the US won't be anything like the first one which was divided between the north and south. It'll be much more chaotic with neighbor killing neighbor and a lot of domestic terror attacks happening all across the country. Because we all know it would mostly be a war between those who support Trumpism and those who don't.

I've read from other sources that say our modern civil war will resemble what happened during "The Troubles" of Ireland.

I have seen bits of that movie on Youtube and it does seem to be of high quality production.

It was number 1 at that box office for a week or so, but has been nowhere near the cultural phenomenon The Day After was. Maybe it will be once it is available to stream or become iconic years from now as sometimes happens.


I saw it last Friday. Based on the lack of response here I assume most of you have not seen it so I am just going to give brief summary and thoughts. The California-Texas alliance is not the only improbability, 4 journalists from different outlets working together is another. For me, I pretty much forgot about them and just got into the movie. The movie centers on the back-and-forth relationship between a veteran ambitious journalist played by Kristen Dunst and a young inexperienced ambitious journalist played by Caliee Spaney. It is a taut flick that becomes a very good action flick in the last 20 minutes or so. There is no overt message related to our current troubles. If there is a message it is that in a civil war everyone and every place will become the battlefield in one way or another.

While it does not live up to the hype it is well worth seeing.

there were some implausible details in the movie that distracted me from whatever message it wanted to impart on me. I will concede that it was an entertainment of sorts in that it made me think.

I don't know what people see in these fear-mongering doomsday movies. Do they really think they will somehow survive is something like that actually happens? Do they think it will be worth it to survive? Or do they think at all?

There are people in this country just itching for a civil war, where they can have their revenge on those not ideologically pure enough. Chances are, such a conflict wouldn't be region versus region like the last time, but would be more of a matter of guerilla war much like in Northern Ireland, where neighbors murder neighbors. Either they don't understand the extent of such an ugly conflict, or there truly is something awful and horrific about such people for wanting such a thing.
