Loser kills 3 women at Pittsburgh gym:

http://www.kcra.com/news/20283920/detail.html

He was mad because he'd never had a date, so he killed a bunch of women. Of course, this is the cue for NTs to talk about how violent Aspergers people are.

I just took a very quick look at the article, but I saw no mention of AS. Did I miss it ?

Violence does not equal AS, right? *sigh* topic

AS people are socially clueless, not antisocial.

Anyone who wants a date (opposite or same sex) will get one. It may not be your dream date, but it will be a date. This means you alter your expectations.

I wish people would realize this, NT or AS.

No mention of AS in the article, and I combed through it. This guy had a severe anger problem, and it morphed into an obsession with people he thought would not date him.

This is narcissistic personality disorder, or some borderline/obsession thing. Very difficult to treat. Like the Lepine guy who murdered 11 women in Montreal in 1989.

Assumptive, and wrong - it is no more fair to presume the worst of others than it is to be treated poorly by them.

With all the mentions in news reports of how anti-social he was, I did wonder how many people were going to start asking the question ... but there is, at least, no guessing in the article.

When I read things like this it reminds me how important it is to never, ever, ignore people who are showing signs of frustration with the social world. One should be nice to everyone, even when they are not being nice to you. It could make a difference; you never know.

I have been reading this website for a long time, so I have at least some idea of what AS is like. AS never came to mind when hearing about this incident, nor to I think those with AS are antisocial at all. I agree totally with Sartresue. There is a big difference from being antisocial and the difficulties people have learning social skills. I don't see it at all the same. This guy was obviously angry probably depressed or Bi Polar or he has some other significant issue, and not ever getting a date is the superficial reason. I'm sure what led him to that extreme was far more complex than not getting the girl.

The article says anti-social. And even that isn't a diagnosis, but how he was described by other people.

Seriously, I neither get nor appreciate your title here. There was no mention whatsoever of AS in the article, it's probably not overly likely that he had it, and if anything, your title will do more harm than anything else. People who see this but don't read the article will think that he had AS, when no mention of it is recorded. So you're ultimately contributing to the violence myth more than the media right now.

Agreed, fully.

I can understand how easy it is to assume he might have AS. That was my first assumption as well.

However when I really think about it...I think he is more NT than AS.

First of all, while AS people are extremely needy for human companionship and the need for girlfriends I believe that people with AS will have an easier time getting over such needs with time. If a person with AS goes so many years as this guy did without a girlfriend I dont think they would feel as miserable as someone who is NT. Reason I think is because the AS person would've already found a comfortable fitting routine with their social-less life without a significant other in the past 25 odd-so years of their life. THIS IS JUST A THEORY!! ! So go easy on the fruit you plan to pelt at me everyone!

I figured the AS theory would be put forth about the Pittsburgh shooter, but not here. We of all people should know better than to diagnose someone based on a newspaper description of a single action, a few of his words, and a handful of descriptions of him.

For those of us who went through the diagnostic process, we know full well how complex it can be, and the specialists (and even high-tech testing) required.

My concern is that the media will look at this guy who's already being labeled "anti-social" and quickly introduce mental illness, and possibly AS/ASDs into his description long before any details about his life or health become available. That, if anything, should be watched for.

I see no reason to think that the killer had AS.

From my own expereince of AS and life, over all the years when I did not have any female company I was not happy about being alone but I settled into a routine where I found things to pass the time and give purpose & meaning to my existance.

Diagnosed under the DSM5 rules with autism spectrum disorder, under DSM4 psychologist said would have been AS (299.80) but I suspect that I am somewhere between 299.80 and 299.00 (Autism) under DSM4.

The whole theory that Aspies/Auties are violent rapists/mass murderers was created by a Russian-American girl in her early 20's who has absolutely no medical knowledge or any relatives with an ASD diagnosis.

The whole theory that Schizos are violent is silly too. Nash is diagnosed with it, after all. However, cocaine induced psychosis patients are quite sadistic and masochistic.

Ignorance is bliss.

For a while, it seemed fashionable for news outlets to claim that every miscreant was autistic. Remember Seung Cho, the Virginia Tech shooter? I am just jaded, that's all. So far, most news articles have refrained from psychoanalysis, from what I've been reading. Maybe the press has finally realized that evil DOES exist, and that some things have no other explanation. It is very fashionable in the western world to chant "their environment made them do it", at least it has been. There is no environment that will turn a man into a vicious misogynist, except maybe being abused by his mother, and there's no indication of that here. He was just evil. I didn't seriously mean that he had AS, just that the media would soon claim so. I have been surprised.

Killers who set out to get revenge against uncaring young women usually have ASPD like Ted Bundy for example.

Well, when I read the articles about George Sodini (the shooter) it does not say anything about autism thankfully. However, I can't ignore the other things they did mention such as:

1. He was a computer programmer.
2. He has never married.
3. Despite his best efforts, he could not get a date.
4. He wasn't very social.
5. He had a violent meltdown.**

These are the same kind of things that every guy with AS has to deal with in some form or another. Based on what he did and said, it does not appear that he knew he had AS. When he was a kid, diagnosing AS was not a well developed science. Most kids with AS back then were simply labeled as being weird.

But its also true that most aspies are not violent. And its also true that most schizophrenics are non-violent as well.

And I must note the striking similarities between him and Chou - the VT shooter.

** PS- I also need to point out that when I have a meltdown, it isn't a planned event. The shooter clearly planned his event.
