About 3 and a half hours ago, at 08:00 local time, three bombs went off in Belgium's capital Brussels;, two on Zaventem airport and one on a metro station. All public transport has been stopped in Brussels.
There are casualties, but the exact number is still unclear. The first reports said 11 dead and 35 injured at the airport and some may be dead (the reports are contradictory) at the metro.

The current estimate is 15 dead and 55 injured at Metro Station Maelbeek.
Whole Brussels is locked down, the airport evacuated and no flights until tomorrow morning 6 am.
In the whole country is highest threat level (4).
People are asked to stay inside their houses.

The count of deads has increased to 14 at Zaventem Airport and 81 injured and 20 at the Metro Station Maelbeek and 55 injured.
Many of the injured ones are undergoing emergency surgery at the moment.
It is horrible that this has happened.

Thank you for the updates, Eloa.

It's terrible. Those who lost their lives and those who are currently fighting for their lives, as well as those who are now dealing with the loss of loved ones, are all in my thoughts, as I'm sure they are in all of yours.

Terrible.

There is a video of people evacuating a smoke filled train tunnel under emergency lighting and a baby can be heard screaming. Somehow, the cries of this baby seemed like a totally fitting response to the situation. It is horrible.

I've travelled through that airport several times going to meetings in Brussels.

If I had still been in my previous job, I might even have been among the victims... 8O

This will only enforce the widespread view that Belgian law enforcement is unable to deal efficiently with terrorists threats due to chronic political/bureaucratic infighting in Belgium.

It was only last month that I took a flight from Zaventem, I know this airport very well.

It does not surprise me. And when I first read about it this morning my first thought was that it could be a potential revenge attack for the recent arrest of one of their operatives who where behind the Paris attacks.

GGPViper and Eloa, I know what it's like to have a close call like that. I don't know what to say other than I'm sorry you have to deal with that emotional turmoil on top of the horror of the attack, and I'm very glad you are both okay.

Update: According to Reuters, a third bomb was found and defused at the airport.

A still shot from a CCTV camera shows three suspects at the Brussels Airport; two are assumed dead, the third is sought after all over Europe

They say that two suspects are on the run, one who operated at the airport, and one who operated at the metro.
But it is easy for terrorists to hide in Brussels (<- sarcasm, because from Paris-attacks most wanted terrorist Saleh Abdeslam was hiding in Brussels for 4 month before being caught).

The suspects apparently used cluster bombs to make as many injured as possible.
There are more than 200 people injured, from slightly to life-threatened.

The airport will be closed at least until Thursday.

I'm not surprised this happened, given the fact that most European countries have an open border policy and don't keep an eye out for suspicious individuals.

RIP to those who passed away and hopefully they kill every one responsible for this attack.

Someone set up us the bomb.

That video is 2 months old. I wouldn't want to be someone who was behind that marketing campaign right now. They're getting destroyed in the comments.

Sad to see, but imo, it's time someone tells America to stop creating these terrorist groups with their own terroristic wars.
