The US embassy in London is advising Americans to ‘keep a low profile’ during Trump’s visit

Ahead of President Donald Trump’s high-profile visit to the U.K., the American government’s representatives in the country are warning U.S. citizens to lay low during what is planned to be three days of large-scale protests.

The U.S. embassy in London listed on its website a number of actions to take this week, including keeping “a low profile.” Here are all the safety suggestions:

• Be aware of your surroundings.

• Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings that may become violent.

• Keep a low profile.

• Monitor local media for updates.

• View updates from U.K. police at met.police.uk and follow @MetPoliceEvents and @MetPoliceUK for guidance.

More than 50,000 Americans live in London, and have so far faced no notable violence stemming from animosity toward the U.S. president.

Some 4,000 police officers are reportedly being deployed for Trump’s visit, as London authorities prepare to mobilize a force not seen since the 2011 London riots, which saw five people killed. Security forces from other regions of the country have restricted leave so that their officers can make up the numbers, the Guardian reported on Monday.

The U.K. Police Federation has described Trump’s visit as putting “unquestionable pressure” on the country’s police forces.


Trump says he feels 'unwelcome' in London due to protests

Earlier on Thursday, Trump said he believes London citizens “like me a lot,” despite reports of multiple planned protests against him, including a protest involving a 20-foot-tall inflatable baby bearing his face that was scheduled to be flown during his visit.

But after being asked about the blimp, Trump reportedly told The Sun newspaper: “I guess when they put out blimps to make me feel unwelcome, no reason for me to go to London.”

London's mayor approved a request from protesters to fly the blimp during Trump's visit near Parliament.

“I used to love London as a city,” Trump continued in the interview published on Thursday. “I haven’t been there in a long time. But when they make you feel unwelcome, why would I stay there?”

Trump’s schedule only has him in London for one night and will largely avoid planned protests.

And when I say that I am talking about government because the people of the UK agree with me,” Trump added of being made to feel unwelcome.


My guess is that very few if anything will happen to Americans in London and the relationship among the people will remain close. If Trump is reelected all bets are off.

Most American citizens are against Trump, so it’s really just targeted against him and his “fine” Confederates.

To our allies overseas, give him hell. :D

It would probably have been generally accepted that flying such a 'blimp' during the visit of a conventional, titular Head of State is inappropriate, but when the office in question is so politicized it's obviously more complicated. One has to wonder though whether the Mayor of London, a politician himself representing the Labour Party, would have been quite so ready to grant similar permission had the US President in question been Hillary Clinton.

Hang on, let me get this straight. So, the government are arranging the demonstrations, then? I knew they were a devious bunch, but avoiding diplomatic relations through the deployment of government issue Trump baby blimps is rather underhand, I must say.

No, no reason at all; coming here to do, like, diplomacy and stuff would be soooo boooring! To be fair, I wouldn't travel all that way to be with Theresa May, either.

Sadiq Khan is desperate to be a global figure. The Sadiq blimp raised more money and much faster without the media attention and run by ordinary people not millionaire politically connected "socialists".

The real truth right now though: both countries are f****d, subjective will lead either into believing their country is more f****d than the other - but, the only thing that matters is that both of our countries are f****d.

Ha, I did like the baby balloon, though that had been floating around on reddit for a bit before it actually happened. That said they have ' no freedom of speech in the U.k' yet the called trump a c**t repeatedly and as far as i can tell there was not any real police intervention.

Which strongmen? Putin, Duerte (that little sh*t in the Philippines), Erdagon, even Kim in North Korea who he use to ridicule.
When my country had been founded, the men who led the way, who were among the most intelligent men of their day, understood that an absolute democracy could be as dangerous as an authoritarian government. Sometimes charlatans and demagogues can and have whipped up national resentment and bigotry to use democracy to achieve nefarious ends. Sometimes the majority can be wrong. That's why the founding fathers of America established a constitutional republic with checks and balances to keep government on the straight and narrow. It hasn't always worked like it was supposed to, but it mostly has, and has kept the United States a stable free government.
