A Navy SEAL platoon leader controversially pardoned of war crimes by President Donald Trump has been described as “toxic” and “freaking evil” by fellow Iraq veterans.
Gallagher was accused of multiple offences during his final deployment to Iraq in 2017.
The sniper and medic was originally accused of premeditated murder after allegedly stabbing to death a captured and wounded 17-year-old Islamic State fighter in Iraq in May that year.

According to two SEAL witnesses, Gallagher said over the radio “he’s mine” before walking up to the prisoner and stabbing him repeatedly with his hunting knife.
Gallagher and his commanding officer, Lieutenant Jake Portier, then posed for photos standing over the dead body.
Gallagher was accused of being more reckless and bloodthirsty than his fellow commandos during his deployment, shooting indiscriminately at civilians, taking “random shots” into buildings and firing his rifle “about ten times as often” as other snipers, even when there did not appear to be targets.
Investigators claimed some platoon members found his actions so disturbing, they tampered with his sniper rifle to make it less accurate, and fired warning shots to scare off civilians before he could shoot them.
The Navy charged Gallagher with premeditated murder, attempted murder and nearly a dozen other defences, including obstruction of justice and bringing “discredit upon the armed forces”.
According to The New York Times, he threatened to kill fellow SEALs if they reported his actions.

Trump intervened to have Gallagher's crimes pardoned and his old rank restored.

A military jury acquitted Gallagher of murdering a captured Islamic State fighter, but convicted him of illegally posing with the detainee’s corpse. The President reversed the court's decision to lower Gallagher's rank and pay. Then after the fact a leaked video of fellow Navy SEALS surfaced. Were the jury and the President supposed to have been aware of unheard testimony when rendering their verdicts?

Gallagher was a medic and pledged the following oath
I solemnly pledge myself before God and these witnesses to practice faithfully all of my duties as a member of the Hospital Corps. I hold the care of the sick and injured to be a privilege and a sacred trust and will assist the Medical Officer with loyalty and honesty.

Murdering a 17 yr old in cold blood and then standing over their corpse to take selfies would appear to have breached his oath and suggest a somewhat skewed moral compass.

I imagine Trump would have him on his list of potential future republicans in his 2020 list along with Nick Sandmann and Rosie ODonald

This sort of behaviour, on all sides, wouldn't have been uncommon during WWII.
The hatred was real.
I remember reading about the practice of decapitating Japanese soldiers (I am assuming the soldiers were dead at the time), boiling their heads to get rid of all the meat and sending the skulls back home to girlfriends/wives/friends.

Scratch the surface of a "civilised" person to reveal the savage beneath.

Decapitating dead soldiers and stabbing a teenager to death and then using his dead corpse as a photo trophy are quite different. Trump's decision to exonerate this man is highly questionable

Seems like a minor offense.

Definitely not a "war criminal".

He was hired to kill people (enemies), so sure, he's got "skeletons in his closet".

However, (from article) "In July, he was acquitted of murder by a military jury".

There would have been many, many, many, many instances of war crimes on both sides, during WWII.
My mother was raped, and kept as a sex slave by the allies, as an example,
And there is a famous case where a Polish young woman was raped to death because it was thought she was a German.
Obviously , rape was quite common with the occupation of Germany,
So much so that German women often resorted to putting a rotting chicken carcass down their blouse to "discourage" unwanted attention.

There were examples of German women having their breasts cut off so they couldn't suckle their children.
The lucky ones only had their nipples cut off.

And let's not delve into the Dresden atrocity,
Or other "Fire Storm" incineration campaigns as in Hamburg.

But one of my favourites is "Eisenhower's Death Camps".
POWs, (oops, they were denied that title, weren't they) that were sick and crippled, shot/killed at random, or driven over by bulldozers and buried in the hollows the German prisoners dug using their own hands.

Also, don't forget the man-made starvation event post Germany's surrender.
6 to 12 million German civilians died as a result of that little indulgence.

He was hired to kill enemy combatants in battle. Not murder surrendered children and then use the corpse for a selfie. Such a person is actually a menace to decent society. Of course trump enjoys the company of such "fine" people.

I kinda doubt he was saying it was okay that his mother was raped and kept as a sex slave.
