I think the whole point is that a boy was hurt badly.

His body will never be what it was.

I have a concern about the girl who said, apparently on TV, that he deserved this.

How does someone think like that?

^^^
the operative word was "think" [in terms of the video female speaking before thinking].

A lot of people think like that here, Sylkat. This doesn't surprise me at all.
This boy lives about 20 minutes away from me, on the north side of the city.

Anyone who lives here can tell you that attitudes to autism, whether diagnosed or undiagnosed, are pretty horrible here, especially amongst school age children and teenagers.

I'm very sorry to hear about it though. Hopefully the police don't buy into the bullsh*t, although the court system here is next to useless anyway.

My best wishes to him and his family.

I've heard Queensland is very socially and politically right wing. Is there a connection between that and this anti-autism prejudice?

It certainly is right now. Generally big cities are better about it, but as soon as you get into the areas of the city that are socio-economically quite worse off (Like Ipswich - where this boy is from - and Logan), it's pretty much the same.

I think the right wing in most places is more connected with the traditional Aussie sterotype (very preveleant in rural areas - or very poor areas of the cities) - guys despite weakness in other guys. That weakness is certainly less tolerated in traditional Australian culture. Unfortunately, it does include autism.

It is a similar issue in the US, in the rural red state patriarchal leaning areas. It is the androgynous young boys that are most often picked on as "the weak fish in the Aquarium".

The young man fit that "stereotype" of "potential victimization". It is also not an issue specific to the label of Autism in the US; however, the social communication difficulties make it easier for one to be taken advantage of by others. regardless if they are on the spectrum or are on a broader autism phenotype.

This is part of primate nature that is "watered down", overall, by civilization, starting with Agrarian way of life when the "Cooperator" became the prize over the "Protector". The result is the domestication of humans, similar to what one can sees with dogs and cats.

Not everyone is as domesticated as others are, still, in our day and age.

One "natural" result is boys playing with bombs instead of spears, per collective intelligence and more advanced tools to assert dominance. Culture and genetics both play a role in what leads to these type of events.

The "Warrior" gene still prevalent in the gene pool, can result in impulsive and reckless behavior when there are no tribal wars to fight. It is difficult to understand if one does not possess that "Warrior Gene".

The domestication of humans is moving faster ahead in Asian countries than the US. One can see that in countries like South Korea, where men are as interested in cosmetics as women are. Additionally, in countries like Japan, young people are losing interest in physical relationships with the opposite sex.

Where there is no competition for mates, there will be less bullying as a natural consequence of nature among males, but not necessarily the case with females, at least in the studies that have been done with some of our animal friends that have common ancestors with humans.

Location, Location, Location is important for the sale of the house and to avoid bullying.

It is easier than changing genetics and culture.

I understand that homogenous cultures such as the ones in Scandinavian Countries are some of the best areas for acceptance, but one will also usually find a leaning of reduction of Sexual dimorphism as well, along with the sharing of resources.

Interestingly, a key indicator is if it is a "gay" friendly area it is likely a safer place for almost every minority as that is a sign that it is not a heavy Patriarchal leaning culture oriented toward the "Protector" and "Competitor" rather than the "Cooperator".

Poor boy. :(
He is the same age as my son.
Is there anywhere where people can help pout by donating money towards the kid's recovery and physical rehabilitation or something?

Edit: NVM I found a link for that. Just not sure how it works?

I have noticed that too. "Gay friendly" works as a proxy for a strong "live and let live" and "let's all just try to get along" ethos in the community. It said in some news reports that the family had already been trying to move out if their current neighborhood before this happened but couldn't afford it. Hopefully in the near future they will find a way to do that.

I have lived in that area of Australia. Queensland used to have a repuation in Australia like Mississipi had in the USA,. It's still not a very tolerant place.

On the positive side things have changed, the premier (equivalent of governor) of the state visited the boy in hospital. I think the authorities are taking this more seriously.

I wouldn't take the visit seriously.

The premier is right wing though - the only reason he's visiting is politics.
This has made international news - so he needs to at least look like he's doing something, even if he's not. And if nothing else, it's also a great publicity opportunity for him.

It does not necessarily mean the authorities will take it seriously - especially now he got what he wanted out of it, it's unlikely that the state will really support or push for this via the police or courts.

You make a valid point about premier Campbell Newman. However the town of Ipswich has got together to start a fund to help support the boy. I think the local police will want to be seen doing something as they'll be under the microscope.

Indeed. I'm reminded of milder "pranks" of this nature described in Attwood's Complete Guide. Bullies would give an already opened bag of potato chips or a can of soda to this girl. The chips would have cayenne pepper on them and there would be stinging insects (I forget which kind - wasps, maybe) in the can of soda.

These things are done with intent to harm, not as a joke or a prank. This incident was attempted murder.

People die from time to time drinking a soft drink that a bee flew into. They drink the soft drink, swallow the bee, and it stings them in the throat.

That's one good reason to drink beer out of doors. Supposedly the bees don't like beer and won't fly into the can.

Here's the only recent update I can find.

From http://blogs.abc.net.au/queensland/2013/05/100000-raised-and-micahel-boggan-appeal-closing-today.html:

Quote:
$100,000 raised and Michael Boggan appeal closing today

Ipswich Mayor, Paul Pisasale will today close the appeal for Micheal Boggan. The appeal was launched ten days ago, after Micheal lost most of his fingers when a home made bomb exploded in his hands. It was hoped that funds could be raised to help Micheal and his family.
