Language is language. It's a set of sounds. You know these experiments of connecting ringing a bell with electric shocks? Hard to un-learn.
It's rare in my generation but my mother has it and she wasn't yet born back then, either.
I actually admire today's Germans for having the courage to face their past.

I believe we all need to shift from "let's fight the bad guys" to "let's make sure we're not becoming the bad guys". I see this need on WP (that was my main drive to try moderating), and in politics of various parties in various countries.
But it's hard, it requires overcoming one's own psychological defenses.
