The people you mentioned would have found any excuse to do what they did.

If it wasn't "Christianity," it would have been something else.

Christianity, in and of itself, is not an "evil" religion.

Maybe not, but Christians are guilty of committing many forms of oppression all around the world. That is a fact.

Most religions are guilty of that.

The Buddhists aren't doing too great in Myanmar at the moment.

The problem is, really, how people make use of religion to justify their actions.

Still Buddhists have not successfully conquered most of the world the way European Missonaries have.

Maybe I am very anti-religion. I'm not exactly an atheist though, if anything I'm an omnist who leans more towards the spiritual movement known as neo paganism.

Today's pagans have no real power over the world (because Christians destroyed them) so they are not going to abuse their power and form a theocracy anytime soon.

Most of Christianity today is pagan and the Christians don't even realize it. Why do you think Christmas is so close to the winter solstice? Nearly all of the seasonal holidays celebrated by European Christians are pagan in origin.

It's nothing new, much of Christiainity was stolen from Pagan beliefs since the time that the Roman Catholic Church was founded. It's called Syncretism and religions do it all the time.

I'm well aware that Christmas was stolen from Yule, Easter from Ostara, and Halloween from Samhain.

Also did you know that the concept of the Virgin Mary giving a miracle birth to the Son of God was most likely taken from the story of the Egyptian Goddess Isis giving birth to the God Horus?

Also ironically despite the fact that 'modern' Christians believe the pentacle and pentagram to be symbols of satan worship, historically these symbols never had anything to do with Satan. It was a symbol used in ancient times by both Pagans who viewed it as representing the 5 classical elements earth, fire, water, air, and spirit as well as the human body itself. And for early Christians like Catholics and Lutherans it was viewed as being symbolic of the 5 wounds of Christ. In fact there are still some very old Christian churches in Europe who have the pentagram decorated on their stone architecture.

Even the Red Rose of Lancaster, the White Rose of Yorkshire, and the Tudor Rose that combined the two colors was based off the Pentagtam. Because it was a 5 petal rose. And it was not that these royal houses were pagans or devil worshippers.

Pagans also did plenty of bad stuff back in the day. Old school Samhain festivals almost certainly involved child sacrifice. Know what a wicker man is? And Tibet under the Lamas wasn't a paradise by any stretch either.

I'm well aware of that too. But like I said, Pagans don't have any power anymore and are highly unlikely to ever form a violent oppressive theocracy.

Speaking of religions that killed innocent children, what about when God commanded the Israelites to slaughter "every man, woman, child, and animal" in the city of Jericho? Or when o' Loving and Merciful God killed every first born son in Egypt?

I guess we arent supposed to count that are we? Or we use the lame excuse of "They were all wickedly sinful people and deserved it".

I'm an atheist. I'm not defending Christians. Or the Jews of the ancient world for that matter. But I don't think you can judge those people by 21st century standards.

Actually I can, because there are still Jews in the middle east known as Zionists who think Arabs are dogs and that they have the God-given right to steal their lands and murder their families while shouting "Death to Arabs!" While the Evangelical Christians here in the US are gleefully siding with Israel's apartheid state and supporting this because they actually think it's biblical and that Muslims don't deserve the right to live.

21st century standards aren't always worth what a pig could spit. We arent really as 'enlightened' as you would think.

My wife is Christian and she certainly isn't for killing Muslims or gays. In fact we attend gay pride events as straight people who are with you.

I'm not accusing you or your wife of being terrible people, I'm not even trying to imply that all Jews or Christians are terrible people. I'm just saying that religion makes people do the crrrraaazzziest things! :jester:
