Just thinking of medical & pharmaceutical companies being able to borrow against the higher valuation to fund increasing production to meet current demand. Sounds positive.

For any UK members who would like the government to close schools and colleges temporarily here is a petition. It's already been signed by 465,737 people

I would say there will be economic losses for most countries during the first quarter of 2020---but that we might rebound in the second quarter. A recession is when there is economic loss for two straight quarters.

Sounds credible in itself, and fits with the flu season point that was raised a couple of days ago.

Our prime minister banned mass gatherings over 500 but within hours tried to attend a football match. Out leadership is worse than having Mike Pence tackle Coronavirus.

Sorry Mona, I really am not being exact, I am in fact being very emotional because my country and my people are suffering greatly now and I really want to emphasise how dangerous this virus is. There is no article, we in my country have many medical students in Italy and we followed the news there with great concern. Instead of tracing the infected peoples' tracks and quarantining all they came in contact with, in restaurants, on trains, in stores etc

... which probably would have been impossible to do ....

I did not recommend just "carrying on as usual." Please re-read what I wrote here.

I recommended that everyone be required to wear a mask on public transport and in other crowded public places -- when production is sufficiently ramped up that it becomes feasible for everyone to wear a mask.

Alas the latter is not the case currently, and, until it is, attempts at quarantine may be the only feasible option.

However, once it does become feasible for everyone to wear a mask, then hopefully quarantining measures can be loosened, replaced by a requirement of universal mask-wearing in most public places.

Teach51 wrote:

Being that I'm over 60 myself, I obviously don't want the latter.

However, to the extent that required universal mask-wearing can replace quarantine, it will no longer be necessary to make such a choice.

The restaurant business is one of the few businesses where universal mask-wearing (at least by customers) would be impossible due to the nature of the business. (Waiters and cooks could be required to wear masks -- and gloves too -- but customers could not be.) Hence other measures would need to be taken to make restaurants much safer than they are now. My suggestions might not be adequate for that purpose, but hopefully someone in a position in authority will think of some viable alternative to destroying the restaurant business completely.

I bloody ain't signing - the kids get enough time off as it is. All they'll be doing is being a nuisance in public places, and no I can't see millions of families staying indoors for a month with their kids bickering and doing whatever else kids do when they're stuck indoors for days on end without getting any fresh air or exercise. God I hate kids.

We've recommended work-from-home programs for decades but for the most part, this idea was rejected and we were given antidepressants so we'd want to rejoin the "real world". Now that the world-at-large is thinking like we do, they're also taking credit for the revelations. It's very frustrating to me in that regard.

The main issue with #1, according to what I've read, is that most people (other than health care workers) don't know how to wear a mask properly so that it actually forms a seal around their mouth and nose.

By repeating a lie, doesn't make it become true. That's the funny thing about the European bias in their recommendation against general population wearing masks. It is true that surgical masks don't seal well. But if they are so useless, Chinese people must all be dead by now. Instead, the number of new cases have dropped to single digit. I mean, single digit! In a country with 1.4 billion people. Whereas Italy is adding 2,500 cases in just one day. China is dismantling all its mild-case temporary hospitals. The Chinese tycoon Jack Ma, is now donating 500,000 COVID-19 test kits and one million masks to the US. Now the US looks like the poor kid on the block that needs welfare.

Shortage of masks is NEVER AN EXCUSE. You can make your own masks before the commercial ones become available. Remember: a mask's filtering power is NOT its main purpose.

I don't want anybody to die, but there are other contagious things out there that kill thousands of elderly people a year. My grandad died of flu a few years ago, it was going about at the nursing home he was in and it was a private nursing home that has a good reputation for hygiene and the staff were going around with masks on and doing everything else they could to not let the flu spread. But it still did.

I don't know why they don't just urge everybody in the whole country to stay indoors for 2 weeks to let this bloody thing pass. But again that is not possible because there are jobs that NEED to be physically attended to by humans every day of the week, like care workers for example. So society still needs to run. And then there's the criminals that will take advantage of the lockdown and go and loot the towns or something.

Like I said in a previous post here, they should just concentrate on keeping the elderly and others with illnesses safe from the disease by mailing information by the NHS giving support and advice for the vulnerable people and their families, so that young and healthy people (like the majority of the population) can still carry on our daily lives. I tell ya, this is really going to disrupt everything, and if they're that concerned about people's lungs then banning all cigarettes should have been the top priority years ago.

Well I went out and retrieved my N95 mask today. I bought them several years ago and put them in storage for a rainy day. It turns out I had 10 new ones. They are a little musky and smell a little like mildew. I gave them a small spray of Tea Tree Oil to kill the mildew and sealed them for a few days.

I decided to make one change for the duration. I will implement one of the Old Fashion Traditions. I am not a fan of drinking alcohol. But for the duration I and my wife will take a small glass of Drambuie each night (about 1/8 th of a measured cup before we retire in the evening. This is along the lines of a Hot Toddy, except we will drink it cold. I have acquired a taste for the stuff. Drambuie is a scotch whiskey liqueur. It is 40% alcohol by volume (that would make it 80 proof). It is made from Scotch whisky, honey, herbs and spices.

"Drambuie" is similar to another Whiskey called "Irish Mist" and a Polish honey liqueur called "Krupnik".

The really scary thing about this virus is: the US has lost its credibility. And we all know what happens next when you lose your credibility.

Public schools (K to 12) are still open, but CUNY (City University of New York) is now holding no more in-person classes for the remainder of the semester and is in process of converting all classes to online.

Same for the State University of New York(SUNY)and a lot of other colleges around the country. It is shocking to me that colleges close down but most other schools are staying open. Those schools are a close gathering of people for many hours.

Off topics:
Out of 700,000 students 100,000 have been taking some sort online courses so this is not building something from scratch but it is a rushed experiment that if works could permanently alter how education is delivered.

I feel bad especially for seniors who probably will have graduation ceremonies postponed or cancelled. Sure they will have graduated, that is as simple as an entry on a college computer system, the diploma can be downloaded and printed out. If their graduation ceremony is cancelled they will have missed out on a something every other class before them has experienced. The ceremony can be held at a later date while it might be better than nothing you can never truly recreate what was missed. You will not be able to get everybody back to the campus which could be a long trip at an inconvenient time, graduates will have started to move on to jobs etc.
