Top home-school texts dismiss Darwin
I would either have a kid in Chriistian school or home schooled, simply because current public schools are dangerous cesspits,
Soooo, you intend to make your children safe from sexual predation by handing them over a bunch of sexually repressed fundies?
Did you miss the last 50 years where the catholic church has been repeatedly shown to have an endemic problem with child abuse in it's ranks?
Or the number of christian cults that abuse children?
Or the number of preachers/church leaders arrested or shamed for sexually inappropriate behaviour?
well... I home school my offspring to have an open mind. Even about cristians when necessary. Also teach him/her to think and be on guard against agendas and brainwashing and the insidious, pernicious tendency of parts of society to insert people into, for lack of a better word, "comfortable" boxes. Self guided or automaton, your choice, not the gov., not the churches, not the family, yours.

Not everyone who home schools their children has what can be considered best for said children. There are plenty of parents who believe that not all races are of equal worth, or that evolution is a blasphemous lie, and by God, their not going to let their kids get exposed to such filthy liberalism!

Dear Kraichgauer, as long as the curriculum is followed, as long as the test scores are good, home schooling is accomplishing the legal requirements. I agree that reasons for home-schooling are frequently religious, racial, cultural, but parents have that right. You get to raise your kid as a Catholic, a Jehovah's Witness, a Mormon, a Lubavitcher Jew, aWhite Supremist, a Wiccan...this is your right, and when said kid leaves home, discovers the internet, meets different people...well, remember that Madalyn Murray O'hair's son is an evangelist. People ultimately find their own paths. Sylkat
A parallel would be insisting that Thor Heyerdahl's books be put into science curriculums He was a wonderful explorer, his books are enthralling reading, but his key theories were wrong, disproved by mitochondrial DNA evidence. At one time, his books WERE the last word, as were Darwin's books. Their time has passed, as science, so has Darwin's. His value is that he started anthropology and observation of progression of change. His books are no longer textbooks, any more than Heyerdahl's. Second point: 'school' is not only what is formally taught or presented in the classroom, y'all are ignoring the human part of it. One of my male teachers once explained to my English class that 'There is no such thing as rape', I believe his terminology was 'you can't hit a moving target'; the boys laughed...the guy was serious. The sheer number of student/teacher sex, whether consensual, coerced, or forcible rape has to appall any parent. The bullying, racial and sexual harassment, weapons and drugs ALWAYS found in the schools is horrifying. I would either have a kid in Chriistian school or home schooled, simply because current public schools are dangerous cesspits, not necessarily because of disapproving of any 1 or 2 items on the curriculum . Sylkat...no, I don't have kids
I would think that that particular teacher was probably a one in a a million imbecile, and not representative of the whole teaching profession.

How about the teacher that decided to play a classroom version of Survivor, and kick out an autistic kid and have each student insult said kid (if I remember correctly the boy was a kindergartner).
I'm unaware of that situation, but that teacher should have been fired that that heartless stunt.

I still have to believe this represents the minority of teachers. We are fortunate enough to live in a school district that is renowned for providing special education to autistic children, of which my six year old is receiving.

Why isn't your kid in normal classes? I'm sorry, but often the best place for kids on the spectrum is outside of the special education classrooms and in normal classes, cause otherwise they're going to be way behind the normal classes.

I very much disagree. The school system had tried to mainstream my daughter in kindergarten, and let's just say it hadn't worked out. The whole idea is to catch her up in special education, and I'm in agreement with the school system.

I seriously doubt the special ed will catch your daughter up, I used the special ed class for study hall in middle school so I would have access to a word processor, I could hear what they were teaching the kids that were in there, and they were 2 to 3 grade levels behind me, stuff I had learned back in Elementary, was new curriculum for these kids. Made me glad that I only had study hall there.
