unlike most other advanced western nations, our schools notably do NOT teach critical thinking skills, we concentrate on regurgitation of information [esp. since "no child left behind"]. the average voter here is not well informed about anything under the sun but especially about their pols and political parties. our nation is awash in the deliberately propagandistic noise of mass confusion which further befuddles the electorate. so instead of a rational decision, voters lash out at who they perceive to be their oppressors which often is far of the mark. all we can do is vote for whom we dimly perceive as being "the lesser of two evils."

You're right that it's not as bad as the 1860s, or 1960s, but does that mean we can all pat ourselves on the back and pretend it's all good now? Of course not, there's still room for improvement.

This is on the mark. Applies to all western countries where critical thought give way to delegating to politicians and celebrities to do the thinking for you :lol:

Ezra, one or two of the respondents to this thread are actually trying to have a discussion about the thread topic and you keep trying to derail this with off-topic politically-motivated accusations.
