The calculated, deliberate lying from the media is one of the main stories in this whole episode. It's a story that will be told eventually, but never by the media themselves.

Looking at https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ there is another country that grabbed my attention: Brazil.
200 million citizens, Sao Paolo and Rio being respective 12 million and 6.5 million cities, then further 15 cities over 1 million.
Now, it's 2nd after the US in yesterday's death toll and still in the exponential growth phase.

NYC Officials Start Adding People Who Never Tested Positive To Total Deaths From Virus

On Tuesday, New York City added a huge number of deaths to the total number of deaths caused by the coronavirus after deciding to include over 3,700 victims who had not tested positive for the virus but were presumed to have the virus because of their symptoms and medical history.

The New York Times reported, “The new figures, released by the city’s Health Department, drove up the number of people killed in New York City to more than 10,000, and appeared to increase the overall United States death count by 17 percent to more than 26,000.”

I heard the hospitals get a special reimbursement from Medicare for coronavirus patients and even more if the patient dies from coronavirus.

Likely, these hospitals are doing this to make more money.

It’s called “Probable COVID19.” NY has been doing this for weeks.

It’s not for any nefarious reason.

It’s not in their best interest to have many deaths. Hospitals and nursing homes with many COVID19 deaths are scrutinized by the state, and are subject to being sued.

dont think this was meant to be a scarey thread but but it just feels like it.. Hates the idea big business may just be profiting off of death count , but given things have seen media report
it just leaves me wondering .

Mexico is in the exponential growth phase, too.
Latin America seems to be catching it now.

I started looking closer at Brazil - what happened there 5-6 weeks ago, when local infections launched.
After Wikipedia:
- No coordinated federal response concerning local spread;
- Local governments ordering shutdowns on their own design each (then pity we don't have detailed data for each governship);
And then:

Quote:
On 24 March, president Bolsonaro declared that the routine in the country must return to normality and that the Brazilian press spread panic around the coronavirus, which he again called "little flu". Speaking on radio and television, Bolsonaro also criticized governors for implementing quarantine—with trade and border closures—and questioned why schools were closed.[75][76]

The president called for "a return to normalcy", an end to "mass confinement" and said that the media had spread "dread".
(highlighting mine)
That was 6.5 weeks ago.

The problem is, outcome of such decisions become visible only weeks and months, possibly even years later.

US virus death rate lower than much of Europe, yet 38% think America doing 'worse'
Mortality data from Johns Hopkins University show the United States has a stronger performance in preventing deaths than Sweden, Belgium, Spain, Italy, United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands.

The U.S. death rate for coronavirus is lower than many European countries, yet 38% of American voters think the United States is doing a "worse job" in handling COVID-19 according to a new Just the News Daily Poll with Scott Rasmussen.

Twenty-one percent of voters nationwide (21%) believe the U.S. has handled the coronavirus better than other nations while 38% say worse.

"It is highly unlikely that many voters have done a serious comparison to how other nations have handled the situation," Rasmussen said. "And, the countries we included in our list took a variety of approaches. So this is not an expression of some policy preference or desire to follow a particular role model. It’s more likely a reflection of domestic political perceptions. As such, it will be interesting to see if the perceptions shift over time in response to new conditions or if they remain driven by partisan views."

I think comparing the US as a whole to selected European countries in order to reassure yourself you're doing ok is quite a stretchy approach.

The red counties contain one third of all US covid deaths. The yellow counties contain another third of all US covid deaths. And the green counties contain the final third of all US covid deaths.

Now let's compare it to the map of urbanized areas in the US:
Image
1/3 cases in the worst-hit aglomeration, 1/3 in other badly-hit aglomerations and the rest of US has the rest of aglomerations... and a lot of sparsely-populated area.

Generally, maps of <some phenomenon about people> in the US are always misleading because of very uneven population density. The same goes with e.g. maps of political preferences by state/county.

Another trend I see in https://www.worldometers.info/coronavir ... de-graphs/ :
Daily new cases are roughly constant since early April;
Daily new deaths are on negative slope since late April.
Very similar trend for my country.

It's a good news. Unless it's an increased testing artifact, its meaning is: contracting COVID now is less dangerous than contracting it a few weeks ago.
Probably, with more knowledge, healthcare systems are getting better adapted to treat it, because it's too short a timescale for the virus to evolve.
