I wonder what precisely kept Prince Philip from being King Philip.
He refused the title because he wanted his wife to have her birthright and not take it away from her. He was her steadfast supporter.
That rings a bell.
But I also read; The Duke of Edinburgh was not granted the title of king because of a rule that states the husband of a ruling queen is called prince consort, just as wives of kings are typically referred to as queen consort.
That would explain why Queen Victoria's husband's title was also prince. Prince Albert.
I have something in my head about Kings naturally outranking Queens, so if a Queen is the ruler, it wouldn't be appropriate for husband to be King. A King's wife, however, can be Queen because she won't outrank him regardless. With Camilla I have some recollection the future title was negotiated at the time they got married, a way of avoiding waves with some of the populace who didn't think she should become Queen.
So maybe I should look it all up, see how close my recollection is to fact ...
So it seems Kate will not Queen, either, but Queen Consort. To be Queen (or King), you have to be in the official line of succession.
I do know the rules of succession aren't a constant, which could be why some of my memories do not match current reality.
Regardless, current reality sits at a spouse being Queen or King Consort, and only the original family member, the person directly in the line of succession, being King or Queen.
