Ah, OK. Thanks for clarifying. It seems the schools were closed (thank goodness), so it won't be an issue.

My friend in Ohio is a teacher and her state has closed the schools. She said some of the teachers are advertising to do childcare for free or with a babysitting fee, during the closure. That's their choice to do so in their own homes. I hope some of the NYC teachers who feel safe may offer to do the same. Everyone needs to do what they can to help others, but it shouldn't be forced upon them at their own detriment.

One of the changes in the last century is in the structure and design of buildings. As modern society evolved they began to create large buildings. Many of these structures do not even incorporate windows nowadays. Instead you have walls of concrete with overhead florescent lighting. [As an Aspie, I hate working in these types of structures. The florescent lighting cause me to experience ocular migraines. The lack of fresh air affects my ability to breathe. Sometimes the noise of the units can be very distracting. It is a little bit like walking into hell. In one office they mounted the heat exchanger right over my desk, and the noise from the unit prevented me from carrying on a conversation over the phone. I had it measured one time and it was well over 100db.] They rely on large HVAC units to regulate the environment. Generally they are focused on temperature control rather than humidity control. When the power goes down, one cannot even work because it is pitch black inside and there is no air flow. It is a sealed environment. Even in buildings with windows, they are fixed windows that do not open.

In general, many people in the modern world commute between their sealed homes and their sealed workplaces. It is this environment, not the outside environment that can mitigate the annual threat of the influenza and the periodic threat of coronaviruses. It really falls down into a basic engineering problem. Design facilities that have HVAC systems that control humidity to the 40% to 60% RH range and temperature secondarily and integrate UV-C systems in the ductwork to kill free floating viruses and bacteria. That simple!

But not to other people.



The word is out now.
Older people are now self-isolating in much greater numbers.
It may crimp their lifestyle somewhat, but it will improve their health situation, relatively speaking.

Look at me, being all positive like.

I just read the same. The number of infections is expected to dip during summer when people spend more time outdoors and then rise again in autumn.

I just wanted to give you a shout out for all your research and for keeping us informed.

I just had a humidifier installed for my house last week. It's set at 40%. Should I put it a little higher? It's generally about 5-10 degrees Celsius where I live. My house gets quite chilly upstairs. I do open my windows a lot because I like fresh air.

Last summer here in Oz:
Very hot and very dry.
There was a very noticeable and unusual number of people with colds, myself being one of them.

I am convinced it is the humidity factor which is the determinant.

Have I ever been wrong?
Yes, but it is rare.

While all precautions are good. (Can't have too much of a good thing, in this context, imo.)
If you are self-isolating, it may not be that important.

I imagine you have family/friends over from time to time.
The extra precaution would pay dividends, here.

As I have said before:
The whole world is going nutz.

I am self-isolating but I have to attend some medical appointments so I will bring germs in, unfortunately.

I've started washing my coat in the washer after I go out.

No one is coming in my house except my mother (rarely).

My bf was here on Friday but that will be it for visitors, for a long time.

I even put the renos of my house on hold.

Remember, we are not talking about the total elimination of transmission.
It is the mitigation of transmission, err, we are talking about.

The principle involved in humidity inhibiting transmission is based upon the distance the virus can travel freely.
Low humidity means the virus can move further.
In a higher humidity environment, the droplets, from someone coughing or sneezing, fall to the ground at a faster rate.



I use gloves when I go out shopping.
Some people find it odd, but who cares?
One guy, behind me at the checkout line, seemed to be trying to intimidate me through fake coughing, but jerks are jerks, what can you do other than be amused at their antisocial behaviour? <shrug>

When I come home, I give the gloves a quick spritz with Glen 20. (Do it outside if you are worried about the ethanol and butane.)

Another thing I would advise to everyone is to wear glasses. I think most people realise that the virus can enter via the eyes also. Normal, non-wrap around glasses aren't complete protection, but they are better than nothing.

You can walk around with surgical shield if you want. You will have the added benefit of people keeping their distance because they will think you are a wacko. I am not there yet, but it is starting to sound like a good idea and in keeping with my hermitical mindset.

I too have cancelled the planned renovation to my place, mainly due to the share market crash. Ouch.
Businesses must be (obviously are), and will be, hurting like hell because of a tiny little "bug".

A final recommendation:
Ditch the BF.
Ditch family members.
Don't get sick.
Every man, woman and dog for themselves.

My reno is an insurance repair because I had a flood so my walls, floors, and fixtures are torn out for two large rooms downstairs. They finished the demo but I'll postpone the rebuild until this ends. Whenever that may be. I think I have two years to claim it on insurance.

I don't care if I get sick, except that I have vulnerable family members. I have to be proactive for them.

I won't ditch my skunk.

ISIS advises terrorists to steer clear of Europe during coronavirus outbreak

The Islamic State is telling members not to travel to Europe to carry out attacks as the coronavirus ravages the continent.

After years of telling adherents to wage jihad in European countries, the terrorist group issued a set of “sharia directives” in its al Naba newsletter telling attackers to “stay away from the land of the epidemic.”

ISIS also said terrorists should wash their hands regularly and “cover their mouths when yawning and sneezing.” The newsletter describes the COVID-19 virus as a “plague” and a “torment sent by God on whomsoever He wills.”

“Illnesses do not strike by themselves but by the command and decree of God,” the directive read. ISIS also told followers who are already in Europe to stay put and not travel back to the Middle East.

I never call them the'Islamic State' they are Daesh, and no Muslim should. It contributes directly to the presumptions and myth they wish to perpetuate to recruit people as well as the dichotomy that sustains conflict

It feeds the delusions and is the same as humouring or honouring a madman by giving in to his delusions despite knowing you increase his power in doing so.
