It was only recently that Trump sold the Kurds out to Turkey. They were in fact extremely effective.

The similarities in Turkic, Mongolic, and Tungusic arise not from common descent, but from lateral borrowing. One reason for this is that actually these language families were more different in the past, but became more similar in the present. This kind of convergence as you go forward in time points away from a language family, and more to intense language contact and borrowing, which is significant in its impact on a language. But this kind of language contact does not a common descent between the languages create.

On the other hand, in Indo-European, the languages in question were actually a lot more similar in the past than they are today. You can see this when you compare Classical Latin, Ancient Greek, and Sanskrit to each other, all of whom go back about 2 to 3 thousand years. There were a lot of affinities between those languages, but nowadays languages like Hindi are pretty different from the Romance languages. If you notice, here, they converge as you go backward in time, unlike in the above paragraph. This convergence backwards in time points to them being a language family and diverging as they separated from each other.

There are other reasons to support Indo-European, such as predictable sound changes in words across the entire family as you go from Proto-Indo-European to the present day, and in a large array of native vocabulary these predictable sound changes all cause modern native words to converge to the same stems as you move backward toward Proto-Indo-European. Altaic has never been demonstrated to have this. The lack of predictable sound changes and correspondences, but still lots of similar vocabulary combined with well-established shared history, points to borrowing and contact rather than common descent.

So yes, looking at the similarities is important, but similarities alone do not a language family make. Altaic is discredited as a language family, but well-supported as a Sprachbund; while Indo-European is very well established as a language family by the facts.
