The only people who need to panic are the people in China at this time no evidence that there is going to be a serious outbreak outside of China.

Another deadly virus is spreading from state to state. It has infected 15 million Americans so far and killed more than 8,200 people this season alone.

It's called "Influenza".

Why is no one in a panic about it? At least 140,000 people have been hospitalized with complications from the flu, and that number is predicted to climb, so what makes the "Wuhan" virus so fearful?

The Media.

You have all been duped by the Media into believing that the Wuhan virus is more deadly than any other virus. It isn't. So go ahead and wear your masks, use your hand-sanitizers, and "elbow-bump" people instead of shaking their hands. You will look no more silly than any hypochondriac out there.

What I heard on the radio is that the deathrate of regular flu is 1/1000. With the Wuhan virus it is supposed to be 1/10.

I calculated the probability of dying from the Wuhan virus once you catch it at less than 3%.

Look at the statistics and do your own math. Don't let the Media "own" your mind.

I mostly agree with this.. buuut the WHO has declared it a global health emergency for a reason - mostly because there’s no vaccine against it yet sooo they’re trying to stop the spread & more deaths. Also, isn’t the fatality rate a fair bit higher than influenza? :?

Sure, and I am not trying to diminish the threat, I'm just trying to point out that there is no need for panic -- caution, yes, but not panic.

It looks like a major travel ban is materializing. This may be a good thing because a major epidemic is significantly more dangerous global today because of the speed the epidemic can travel anywhere in the globe in a matter of hours. Air travel is a major advance to transportation speed but it is also one of the main reasons viral and bacterial outbreaks can spread rapidly.

Many major airlines are canceling all flights to and from China. These include: British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Lufthansa, Air India, Seoul Air, Egypt Air, Air France, Finnair, Cathay Pacific, Jetstar, Lion Air, Air Canada, Kenya Airways.

Delta airlines has reduced flights in and out of Mainland China.

Pakistan says they're halting all flights to and from China until Feb. 2.

Singapore said it would ban travelers from China's Hubei province.

The United Kingdom and New Zealand also advised their people against nonessential travel to China.

Russia has signed an order to close the border between them and China. They also blocked tour groups from China.

China has cut off access to Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, trapping more than 50 million people.

Italy suspended all flights to China

South Korea urged an increase in its level of caution to "restraint" when traveling to China.

Hong Kong reduced half its flights and shut down rail service to mainland China.

United Airlines, the largest U.S. airline to China suspended some flights to hub cities in China and reduced daily departures from 12 to four.

United's pilots, concerned for their safety, will be able to drop trips to China without pay, a union memo said, according to Reuters.

American Airlines suspended L.A. flights to and from Shanghai and Beijing.

The Allied Pilots Association (APA), which represents 15,000 pilots for American Airlines filed a lawsuit to halt service with the airline, citing “serious, and in many ways still unknown, health threats posed by the coronavirus."

"I am directing all APA pilots to cease flight operations between the United States and China," said APA president Eric Ferguson. "Until further notice, if you are scheduled, assigned, or reassigned a pairing into China, decline the assignment by calling your Chief Pilot or IOC Duty Pilot. Inform them you are declining in accordance with the CDC and WHO declarations."

------------------------------------------

Meanwhile, people in China are defying a lockdown by leaving and entering a bridge over the Yangzte River in Hubei province -- the country's virus epicenter. It's been on lockdown for vehicles, but people could still get out in "special circumstances," according to Reuters.

------------------------------------------
The death toll from the virus has increased to 213 on Friday, with a total of 9,692 infected. The number of cases has increased more than tenfold in a week, with 43 new deaths reported on Friday, the most in a 24-hour-period.

-------------------------------------------

I agree with Fnord that this coronavirus is being blown out of proportion especially when you compare it with the number of deaths from the flu each year. Those most affected are the people in China at the epicenter of the outbreak. But a panic takes on a life of its own. Like I said earlier it is like a herd of buffalo that is in a stampede. You do not want to stand in front of charging buffalo when they are coming right at you. Best to prepare early and have a well thought out action plan in place. And then implement the plan.

---------------------------------------------

Hong Kong's Polytechnic University has developed new face masks that could be reusable for up to 70 times, according to local reports.

I calculated the probability of dying from the Wuhan virus once you catch it at less than 3%.

Look at the statistics and do your own math. Don't let the Media "own" your mind.

I calculated the probability of catching autism at less than 3% (2.47% in the US per: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epidemiology_of_autism). Look at the statistics and do your own math. Don't let the Media "own" your mind.

Oops, except that most people here belong to that 3%. Hmm ... and I hear a lot of whining here. It's all good when that 3% is someone else, isn't it? It's not so good when you are inside that 3%, and have to survive on government money, is it? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generic_you)

This man happened to be one of the people in the 3%. Not enough hospital infrastructure to help him. It gives a new meaning to the expression: "drop dead." https://www.france24.com/en/20200131-dead-man-lies-on-an-empty-street-at-china-s-virus-ground-zero
Image

We pay for car insurance, we pay for healthy insurance. We haven't paid for epidemics insurance. We don't have the adequate infrastructure to handle an epidemic similar to the current case. We see China building an emergency hospital (Huoshenshan Hospital). Oops, then they realized that they needed at least one more (Leishenshan Hospital). Other countries can see that, and they can see people dropping dead in the streets of Wuhan. That is why Russia closed the border with China. That is why we have checkpoints at airports. Doing nothing is not an option. Governments are not panicking. They are just doing what need to be done. There are some luckier places, say, Vietnam, where people have much less to worry. For instance, Ho Chi Minh City's temperature right now is 91 F (maximum), with a humidity of 64%. Yeah, Russia has to worry, Vietnam? Not so much.
