Gotta love democrats and lefties trying so hard to exploit coronavirus to their political advantage.

@EzraS, I've been seeing your posts and I understand where you're coming from. From a numbers and statistics standpoint, not a lot of people are really dying. People die all the time, this is true.

However, I am uncomfortable that you make light of the fact that people are dying more. Although I may be misreading your statements and you actually have some sort of empathy for the thousands of people dying.

Lots of people die=true

There are a lot of reasons people die=true

Coronavirus is nowhere close to the no. 1 cause of death = true

But we should still care about the people who die and could die from coronavirus, your posts (at least those I've seen) make you seem like you don't.

P.S. Left, right, Democrat, Republican, the politicians. No, wait, most people in the world try to exploit things to their own advantage. If you believe that only lefties and democrats would take advantage of a crisis, then I have no words I can say.

How is taking the virus threat seriously exploitative?
The left is only throwing Trump's words back in his face.

What I am pointing out is my observation of how people are reacting to the death rate of C19, in comparison to how they hardly bat an eye over things that kill millions each year.

I'm seeing the lefites here doing it far more than the righties.

It is not the number of cases but the number of cases all at once that is overwhelming the system leading to preventable deaths.

There were 35 million cases of the flu in the US last year and 45 million the year before that. When I compare that to 164k caeses of corona, I'm not seeing it as being more prolific.

In the US it is only the greater New York City area so far but other cities are expected to follow soon. The "regular" flu has targets mostly a wider age group, COVID-19 at first targeted more vulnerable populations that why some are calling it #BoomerRemover.

But the all at once factor still is huge. If you receive three inches of rain over a two day period you will have a bunch of puddles. If you have three inches of rain in an hour you have flash flooding. Most people not having immunity is causing a spike. No treatments are causing more cases needing hospitalization of what seems to be basically a very mild disease. Flu is usually more spread out. The flu is a factor. This is reported to be a bad flu year, and usually, by the end of March the flu season has mostly petered out which seems not to have happened this year. In a milder flu year the systems probably would have been able to handle coronavirus.

One thing to note "mild" COVID-19 is anything not requiring hospitalization. It means anything from asymptomatic to fever, splitting headaches and so weak one can hardly get out of bed.

I'm not thinking that C19 is the same as the flu. But as far as numbers go, it has barely scratched the surface worldwide as far as the number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths caused by the flu in just the US.

So I personally am far from being alarmed by what I am seeing as far as the raw data goes, when put it into perspective.

My feelings have not changed regarding this since a month ago.

A month ago I was hearing how this was supposed to have killed several millions by April 1st.

It doesn't look like it is even going to reach 1 million cases by then not to mention deaths, which aren't even close to a 1/10th of a million.

So far predictions I have seen have fallen miles short of the mark.

Right now at least. Though likely the perceived imbalance is due to the media and their coverage and has less to do with the left doing it more than the right.

I try to think that things tend to cycle. George W. Bush took advantage of 9/11 to make the Department of Homeland Security, and 9/11 killed less people than coronavirus has right now. If anything was an overreaction than the reaction to 9/11 was THE overreaction. Now I do think it was a horrible tragedy and should be treated as such.

@EzraS I don't know where you get your information from but I never saw a prediction that hit the millions by April 1st. Now I did see a prediction that almost 2 million would die if nothing was done, but that's a model where it assumes people are ret*d and don't react to a sickness spreading through their population and do nothing to protect themselves, which would never happen in reality.

Is it bad right now? Not for most of the world.

Will it be bad? That really depends on what we do to control it.

Are people overreacting? I'd say half are and that the other half don't care enough.

What's clear is that the official numbers are nowhere close to the actual numbers, remember only the people that are tested are listed in the statistics and governments can fudge the numbers (CHINA!! !) to make themselves look better. So I think the situation has gotten to the point of worry, that the US is going to be the hardest hit of all nations despite being a 1st world country. We should do something and I do think we should listen to the administration about what to do. After all, I'm not an epidemiologist.

I was referring to armchair predictions I have seen.

I suspect it will be about 20 times that much. I hope I'm not one of them, though; I have good money riding on it.

There's someone predicting 4,000,000 C19 deaths in the US.

And I still don't think COVID19 is all that big of a deal when everything else is taken into consideration.

Even at 2 million deaths, it will still be way
down the list of things that kill people.

Preventable things no government has taken anywhere close to drastic measures to prevent.

Ironically the 10 weeks of stay at home everything nonessential shutdown proposed by the governor of Virginia, will probably save millions of lives from all the many things that kill people outside of their homes.

Ok it's not the black death or the apocalypse.

It's not even the Spanish Flu. But we've done a lot to combat flu with vaccines and constant research.

There is no vaccine and no TREATMENT (other than unproven experimental regimens) that's why it should be considered a big deal.

Is it a big deal when compared to a lot of preventable things. No.

But then you can make that case for every tragedy in the past hundred years. Was Hiroshima a big deal, way more people died in the war than at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Was a 9/11 a big deal, hell no, but it shocked a whole nation. So I think it's a big deal. Was the Boston Marathon bombing a big deal?

Whether or not something tthat kills is a big deal has NOTHING to do with how many people die because of it. What matters is WHO dies because of it and WHY you care about WHO dies.

Sure there's lots of other causes of death that are higher, but unless you are actively campaigning to reduce drunk driving deaths or campaigning against hunger (or obesity) or any other cause. The way you dismiss Covid-19 indicates a severe lack of empathy.

I'm not asking you to treat this like an apocalypse. But maybe, just maybe, if 2 million people die, you could say "That's concerning." after all it could be someone you know.

the people who poo poo the danger of this bug don't seem to get that its basic reproduction number ["R0"] is [median figure] 2.8 which is over twice that of the typical flu bug which has an R0 of about 1.3. what this means is that the geometric rate of communicability of this nasty little hummer is far amplified over the flu bugs of recent memory, meaning LOTS more people can get it LOTS QUICKER, the increase in numbers of infected folks/propagation of infectiousness, is progressive.

@auntblabby, People have a hard time responding if a crisis is not happening right this instant. I get that, but the potential for this virus to actually become a widespread crisis is high and if people continue to ignore health and safety guidelines, I am worried that one of my loved ones will contract the virus and die as a result.

The problem with viral outbreaks is that it's too late to do anything if you wait for the virus to become widespread. You want to nip it in the bud because that is the most cost-effective way of dealing with the outbreak.

Should it be more concerning than 3,287 car crash deaths a day with an additional 20-50 million who are severely injured or disabled? How much have you worried about your loved ones in cars on a daily basis over the years? When they tell you on the phone "we'll be there soon" do you worry about them dying? If not, why not? Apathy and a severe lack of empathy?

You know when I post statistics like how many die in car crashes, they get dismissed without an ounce of empathy. What you are asking me to do is express more empathy towards this, than all the other things I have mentioned that kill a hell of a lot more than 2 million people. Do you even know what the top ten things that kill people are? And what the numbers are? If not, why not? No empathy on your part? At least I bothered to look it up. Those who haven't obviously don't give a crap, right?

True, people do not react to pure numbers.

More people died in the firebombing of Tokyo the from the nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, yet the firebombing of Tokyo is a footnote while people still debate the use of nukes.

Drunk driving is not causing a panic but we do take action, people are constantly being prosecuted for it. It is “baked in” just as coronavirus will be. Drunk driving was even more baked in once upon a time. Cops usually let drunk drivers go with a warning and there was no such concept as a designated driver. Then an organization called “Mothers Against Drunk Driving” came along and made drunk driving unacceptable. Same with the use of lockdowns. Once upon a time lockdowns was something done when prisoners rioted. Then came Columbine and 9/11.

As I said earlier with coronavirus if you are dammed if you do dammed if you don’t. If this is the peak or near peak of the epidemic the liberals will say it is because the lockdowns prevented another 1918, the conservatives will say it was a mild event snowflakes overreacted to or a false flag. OTOH if Trump locked the country down in January or February when there were few cases, the same progressives yelling now he was asleep at the switch back then would have been screaming in unison that this was Herr Donald’s version of the Reichstag fire.
