I don't particularly care that Biden apparently has a terrible sense for optics, but does it not concern you that the "fact checker" blatantly lied and got caught? The guy has been all over Twitter making excuses too, it's pretty embarrassing.

It wasn't one the fact checkers I use, so I have no idea if they were supposed to be trustworthy. Nor was the back and forth what caught my eye in the story. I haven't seen him on twitter; I don't know the details.

@Pepe, It's too much trouble on this browser to quote and dissect your long dissection of my response, but you could do a better job of remembering the level of detail and precision I'm capable of and not insulting my intelligence with flippant innuendo.

I mentioned Biden's watch because you wanted to use it to suggest he lacked compassion. I think that is silly.

You seem to be unaware that Camp David is basically a White House retreat, not a vacation resort, that comes complete with everything a president needs to do his job. Many presidents have conducted critical official business from Camp David.

You seem to have forgotten that I am not judging Biden's mental competence from media clips. I watched him extensively and unedited before the election to judge his fitness for myself.

Your examples that you think reflect dementia are all things that afflict me so, yes, I take it personally even though you don't mean it to be. It's an assault on everyone who is still doing meaningful work past a certain age. No one is who they once were as they age. That doesn't mean they can't still be perfectly competent. To suggest otherwise is age discrimination.

I haven't seen the news story you refer to with Biden asking something to be kept quiet. I can look.

When you speculate on how Trump would have handled it, you forget the disastrous Trump exit from Syria. A disaster of different coloring, but disastrous. Still, if it was the advice from the pentagon on base closure ordering that proves to have been the main mistake in the Afghan exit, given how good Trump was at ignoring the advice from the pentagon, he might not have made that one. But it's silly to speculate. Let the military do it's job and give us a proper postmortem, not amateur political speculation.

You do realise we have a personality conflict, right?
I backed off, but you initiated contact once again.
If you have a problem with my posts/manner/style, perhaps you shouldn't read to my posts.
Simples. 8)

If you don't like my satirical style, don't read my posts, simple.
There are a number of people where I simply skip over their posts.
It saves me a lot of time and mental energy.
Why can't you do this with me?
"Interesting". 8)

You are not as logical as you would like to be, imo.
And I have the impression you don't like to be challenged.

Didn't you read the part where I said there have been other situations where he showed a lack of compassion?
Originally, I was very pro-Biden.
Ask any reasonable person about this.
There is black & white proof of this, in these forums/threads.

I have been supportive of "Uncle Joe" for a long time before the last election, primarily because I am not a spring chicken, either.
I have always been sympathetic in regard to his "senior moments", but that doesn't change the fact that his cognitive abilities are in severe decline.

I used to until recently, had "I luv Joe Biden" in my signature.
I changed it to "I luv KFC" because more information came to light about some of his activities.
Talk to Mikah, if you want to find out what I am talking about. 8)

"Oh, ok."
So why were people heavily criticising him for going there?

There would be a massive amount of "Biden Blooper" on the net/Youtube.
Since I think it better we discontinue our social interaction, I don't intend to exert myself here.
I am not interested in disproportionately pointing out his failings since I am still sympathetic towards him because we are not spring chickens and I have an understandably greater perspective on what it means to be an older person.
Having said that, his obvious failing cognitive abilities is a worry when you consider he is the President of the US.

It wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't last the full term. 8)

I'm sorry.
I am a True Aspie and I have a profound respect for the Truth.
I will say it as I see it.
Don't take it personally.

And I have said on many occasions, I am an older person also. Probably older than you, but it would be foolish for me to go beyond my mental abilities.

Your comment is quite odd, to me, and hardly a rational approach to life.

I accept my declining abilities as a result of growing older.
It astounds me that you have a problem with the obvious fact of life that cognitive decline is inevitable.

This reminds me of the story about King Canute.

Quote:
The story of King Canute and the tide is an apocryphal anecdote illustrating the piety or humility of King Canute the Great, recorded in the 12th century by Henry of Huntingdon.

In the story, Canute demonstrates to his flattering courtiers that he has no control over the elements (the incoming tide), explaining that secular power is vain compared to the supreme power of God. The episode is frequently alluded to in contexts where the futility of "trying to stop the tide" of an inexorable event is pointed out, but usually misrepresenting Canute as believing he had supernatural powers, when Huntingdon's story in fact relates the opposite.

I am not intimidated by the inevitable.
I suspect you are. 8)

Good god, woman!
Did you miss where I said Trump stuffed up by deserting the Kurds, the people who did much of the heavy lifting against ISIS?! 8O
It is on the record, in black and white, in these threads.

"Read my lips."
I am not Hyperpartisan, and will follow the Truth wherever it might be.
I am beginning to understand better why we have a personality conflict. :chin:

I suggest we ignore each other's posts in future.

@Pepe, you can’t take swipes and then say let’s ignore each other. I will address only one of the swipes.

I think we’re all afraid of the natural declines of age to some degree; there is a life time of memories of excellence behind each decline. We have to recognize what we shouldn’t do, but also where we still give a lot of value. My professional associates will tell you that even on a bad day I can still deftly handle more complex problems than anyone else in the firm. I may spend twice as long to do it, I may have more stumbles along the way, but ultimately I still out think 90% of the people in my profession. To say my decline renders me incompetent would be wrong. Is it annoying and frustrating to me none-the-less? Absolutely. I haven’t lost all the hunger to do more.

And that, in a nutshell, is how I feel about Biden’s decline. In decline or not, he’s still out thinking almost everyone out there.

Dementia is a specific medical diagnosis and the label shouldn’t be thrown around casually. I don’t like throwing medical labels at public figures. We can’t know the answer, and it’s an unfair attack, something they can’t disprove without releasing private information. A pet peeve.

It's interesting how, in a thread about being careful about media sources, with an article provided demonstrating how media will selectively arrange articles (or "fact checks") to favor a given side, the discussion so quickly veered to "defending" the side which the article had also been "protecting", rather than discussing how the media chose to initially (and in revisions) present the story.

I’m going to sound like a child fighting with a sibling right now but so be it: I am not the one who brought Biden and his character into this thread. I posted solely in response to someone’s else’s comments that read quite specifically as being about Biden, and not about the fact checking. People quoting me may drop that, but read back. I did not bring the partisanship in. In fact, my reason for commenting was the definition of compassion, not the mention of Biden. To use looking at a watch as evidence of someone’s lack of heart is ridiculous to me, and as I pointed out, I said the exact same thing when people made big issues of Trump doing similar things.

If the discussion you wanted got off the rails, it is not on me.

I stand by not giving a fig about whether or not anyone looked at a watch; with everything serious going on in the world that it ever became a “thing” is mind boggling to me. As for the discussion you wanted, wake me up when a fact checker messes up something that actually matters. Still, I get your point about not blindly trusting the fact checkers, now that I realize that was your point; when it comes to anything that actually matters, I expect them to give their sources so we can follow up for ourselves. I’ve done exactly that quite often.

It seems "fact checking" plays second position to pushing a narrative with some outlets...

How it started:

Quote:
SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA, Okla. (KFOR) – A rural Oklahoma doctor said patients who are taking the horse de-wormer medication, ivermectin, to fight COVID-19 are causing emergency room and ambulance back ups.

“There’s a reason you have to have a doctor to get a prescription for this stuff, because it can be dangerous,” said Dr. Jason McElyea.

Dr. McElyea said patients are packing his eastern and southeastern Oklahoma hospitals after taking ivermectin doses meant for a full-sized horse, because they believed false claims the horse de-wormer could fight COVID-19.

“The ERs are so backed up that gunshot victims were having hard times getting to facilities where they can get definitive care and be treated,” he said.

Picked up, and run with (no verification performed)...

And now this:
Quote:
Update: One hospital has denied Dr. Jason McElyea’s claim that ivermectin overdoses are causing emergency room backlogs and delays in medical care in rural Oklahoma, and Rolling Stone has been unable to independently verify any such cases as of the time of this update.

The National Poison Data System states there were 459 reported cases of ivermectin overdose in the United States in August. Oklahoma-specific ivermectin overdose figures are not available, but the count is unlikely to be a significant factor in hospital bed availability in a state that, per the CDC, currently has a 7-day average of 1,528 Covid-19 hospitalizations. The doctor is affiliated with a medical staffing group that serves multiple hospitals in Oklahoma. Following widespread publication of his statements, one hospital that the doctor’s group serves, NHS Sequoyah, said its ER has not treated any ivermectin overdoses and that it has not had to turn away anyone seeking care. This and other hospitals that the doctor’s group serves did not respond to requests for comment and the doctor has not responded to requests for further comment. We will update if we receive more information.

Granted, a judge has found in a defamation case that Rachel Maddow is not a credible source for news, but you would expect at least one of the other outlets would have made a few simple telephone calls\sent a few emails to verify the facts before running the story.

Sadly, parroting what others say, rather than doing any research\verification, seems to be the way the media operate now.

@Brictoria, Thought experiment: is it possible the doctor exaggerated as a way to get attention to a growing problem so that other individuals considering the drug would choose differently? If so, would you feel that the goal might justify the means?

That doesn't get the media off the hook for not checking a story that they wanted to be true.

Here's a ridiculously scrupulous look at the Ivermectin story that blew up over the weekend:

Thanks for this. I really liked the analysis.

Every time I’ve really dug into a story like he did it’s been clear that NONE of the national news stories are completely correct.

And I’m feeling a bit sorry for a doctor who probably said something different and now is caught in the firestorm of national exposure, which may even mean he’s getting death threats (that is my own brain on overtime, not part of the carefully thought out article you supplied.)

Did you ever dig into the aquarium cleaner drinkers?

The mainstream reporting is not as blatantly hornse crap as this dewormer stuff, but I think the whole thing is weirder.

I think the wife may have killed the husband. Just a theory that I share with some of the dead man's friends.
