Slightly different scenario as Whoopi has been a favourite target of the right for many years. But they have been forced to defend her freedom of speech as she technically has been "cancelled" which is also something they have been whinging about when they want to say racist stuff :lol:

I will assume liberal. Strongly liberal.
I once tried to watch one of standup concerts.
I couldn't finish it.
I found it terribly unfunny.
But she has a right not to be hounded for her opinions.

Well....it's almost two weeks now. She's almost served her "sentence."

I'm not a great fan of her----but I still feel she should have just been encouraged to read up on history, rather than be suspended.

Ok so she's been insensitive in the past. What do you suggest ABC do Brictoria?

Well, ABC would (should) have been aware of her known anti-semitic (also known as "racist" and somewhat more serious that merely "insensitive") act(s) in the past, so they cannot claim to be surprised by this recent outburst (looked at cynically, maybe it was what they wanted from her when they hired her?)... As someone commented elsewhere, "It's not the first time Whoopi has done a Whoopsie".

As to what I think they should do - one (or more) mandatory course(s) on cultural sensitivity\racism, not focussed on the "CRT" aligned "structural racism", but rather on traditional (real) racism such as that which she espoused, along with one (or more) episodes with someone from the Jewish community (or ADL) as the guest to discuss how harmful words\beliefs such as she promoted are (although this, to a degree, also punishes the others on the show who understood what was wrong about what she was saying and had worked to try and correct her at the time) - And maybe she could go on Joe Rogan's show to discuss where such harmful views as she espoused came from.

Being a believer in free speech, I see no reason for her to be banned\suspended\hidden away to protect the show's\networks's "brand" - such acts are more likely to cause the person so treated to take on a victim mentality and become more committed to the words\belief which caused such an action to be taken, rather than cause the person to reflect on what they had done which was wrong and seek to make amends\change their ways.

Having said all that: there is also the argument that through certain prior acts, ABC's parent company, Disney, had set a standard\precedent for such acts, and so this should have been equally applied in this case (or amends should be made, with appologies included, to others who have been treated much more harshly than occurred in this case).

FYI :The "Jewish American Princess" or JAP is a stereotype of Jewish women who are self-involved, spoiled, materialistic, and dumb, spend most of their time shopping for Juicy Jeans. It had its heyday in the '70s, '80s, and into the '90s. It got its Official Handbook. JAP was a common way used to describe people by Jew and Goyim alike. As late as 2013 they had thier own reality TV show although by that time there was more blowback as things were getting more sensitive. Like most stereotypes, it is based on some truth, those types of people existed on Long Island and the Fairfax, Beverly Hills neighborhoods SoCal. It is arguably more sexist than anti-Jewish.

Whoopi Goldberg is a comedian, the recipe was a joke that would not have been considered out of bounds by most at the time it was made as the late great Gilda Radner demonstrated on SNL in '79.

Back to the Holocaust statement. It was literally ignorant and unintentionally offensive. What it was not was racist or anti-Semitic as it was not saying Jews are negative as a group

We have two instances of "inappropriate" things she said in 29 years. That is not a history of bigotry. I can't blame ABC for either not finding out about the 1993 joke or finding out about it and judging it nondisqualifying. At this point, the entertainment industry knows who Whoopi Goldberg is.

IMHO these offensive archivists who go digging for "inappropriate" things people said way back in the past with the goal of canceling people have a mental illness they need to address. If there is such a thing as a societal mental illness that so people in power do their bidding is an indication we have it.

On a similar vein, popular celebrity Nick Cannon was initially fired by CBC Viacom for making outrageous anti-semitic comments on a podcast. He apologised and Fox was aware of his podcast, the network immediately consulted him and accepted his public apology, allowing him to remain host of The Masked Singer.[ He donated his first paycheck to the Simon Wiesenthal Center, in light of the incident

On February 5, 2021, ViacomCBS announced that Wild 'N Out would resume production with Cannon as host, saying that Cannon has "taken responsibility for his comments" and "worked to educate himself" through conversations with Jewish leaders. New episodes began airing April 6.

People think Whoopi is accountable, her comments were nothing compared to Nick Cannons. Storm in a teacup.

I think Whoopi is choosing to continue describing Jewish identity through the lens of Jim Crow America as it applied to Afro-Americans. I think she is choosing to be ignorant and not understand the nuance of the situation that applied to Jewish people during the holocaust.

Not quite Kanye West but certainly on the road to his state of mind.

It's tough to admit that another race has had it harder, and they haven't wasted time bemoaning it. They've just moved on and done well everywhere they've landed. She doesn't like to share the spotlight. My people were enslaved by the Turks, wonder if I should start hating on some other race for stealing my thunder?

I used to like Whoopi Goldberg she was a good actress, but now her comments about the Holocaust has made me change my mind about her, I have read a few books about Holocaust survivors, what they went through was horrific.
We must not forget how Mankind can be cruel to each other.

The Holocaust was certainly about “race.” According to Hitler and the Nazis, the Jews were a “race” that had to be exterminated.

Actually…..it doesn’t matter to the people getting shot, gassed, tortured, etc whether or not it was “race” that provoked the actions leading to their death. They are just as dead whatever the exact motivation.

Whoopi just needs to stop.

And she got the apology right and she is still right in that we should not allow the Nazis and their American contemporaries and the wokes to define us. I have also said that unlike blacks we can mask being Jewish.

But as I said in February to say even if like me you do not think Jews are a race to say the Holocaust was not about race is ludicrous.

Not close to Kanye or Kyrie but after them and Trump’s lunch and at a time of spiking anti Semitic incidents where Jews are wondering if it is safe to be openly Jewish we don’t need her goyimsplaining.
