A tip: I wear disposable gloves instead of using alcohol to wash my hands all the time. I am having everything delivered (quarantine) I unpack it using gloves, then put the gloves in a plastic bag and seal it. Then I wash my hands.
Wearing disposable gloves, a mask and glasses is good when going shopping if you are out and about.

i can't find masks anywhere, surgical or n95. my local ace has been out for a whole month.

gotcha. i thought it was for mixing, wasn't sure. i do like a good limoncello myself.

i remember in late 2017/early 2018 when i lived in CA, there were massive fires raging everywhere and people bought n95 masks like crazy to filter out the ash which was falling like snow for a few weeks. i know they have a shelf life even if they were never exposed to the ash, but i hope they will be better than nothing.

as for a scarf wrapped around your nose and mouth, i assume that's useless? i've got plenty of those..

I found two unopened N95 masks in my toolbox from a home reno a long time ago!

Are they single use? How long can you use one?

Anyone else having trouble getting their older relatives to self-isolate properly? All the over 60s that I know seem positively laid back about the situation. For example, the boiler (outside) is being serviced tomorrow and my mum ( aged 72) thinks it's fine to take them a cuppa and mentioned that one of them is "a right gasbag". Another family friend, aged 65 is still meeting up with friends regularly and even planning on taking a plane to Tunisia from Heathrow on Sunday.

I've tried to point out that there should be no need to even talk with the boiler people or give them tea, just ask them (by phone) to leave an invoice, disinfect the door handles after they leave. We are out in the countryside with plenty of supplies and perfectly positioned to sidestep the main wave.

Until I got to my Mum's she was still planning on going to choir practice on Friday. (hasn't been cancelled, average age must be around 70)

My grandmother (90 this year) has self-isolated and put her planned house-move on hold.
All the other over 60’s I know are customers and they still want me to come over and do their gardens: indeed one couple have booked me in for a months worth of shifts over the next week!

Some of my wife’s decorating customers have said they’re making her their last direct human contact for the foreseeable, but most don’t seem to be particularly bothered.

I’m more worried about my nephew to be honest: he’s four and has cystic fibrosis

My parents are carrying on as normal as far as I can make out, ditto both my aunts. My uncles: one lives in Germany so will be following their guidance, and the other is in hospital already following operation to remove a tumour: so that’s a worry as well.

It's because they've lived through worse than this.

We have no idea what these old people went through during WW II.

And even in the 50's. It was tough in the UK in the 50's--not so much the US.

They went through Polio epidemics in the 50's, too.

We’ve been advised to avoid “non-essential” travel and public gatherings: but no actual restrictions are in place, it’s wholly voluntary.
That and “wash your hands” is the total.
(Well: there’s some new tax breaks for small businesses and a relief fund for low paid workers, but those aren’t public health measures)

We can't sit down in restaurants----but we can get take-out.

We can walk the streets.

We can go to the parks.

No gatherings over 50 people.

Only a certain amount of people could go into a supermarket.

Many city buildings are closed.
