"Knowledge-based economy"
What the hell is that?

By definition half the population are below average IQ. That is what average means.

"I got laid off from my job sweeping floors but that is ok because I am going to retrain and become a high end computer programmer or get a PhD in molecular biology.

Yeah, right.

Oops.

It means an economy centered around high-skill, high-knowledge jobs...

But you're right, if everyone gets a PhD, then wouldn't the economy go chaotic?

Is it really best for the state government to encourage entrepreneurship through support for the small and medium entreprises, particularly immigrants who want to create job opportunities in the state? But I admit people who 'made it' and got American citizenship will move to larger states like Illinois or California or even New York.

What do you think?

I'm a Michigan resident, and I agree with the points that have been previously stated. I mean, it's a bit tricky to reform an entire economy, when the base of the economy - the Auto industry in the case of Michigan - has failed. Take my statement with a grain of salt, for I do not posses a degree in economics.

My theory is that Michigan fails because it doesn't allow trucking due to the fact that they don't allow the environmentally disastrous salts on the road.

Where in the world did you get this? That is not a true statement at all.

I admit it was a half assed thought. I just remember driving in Michigan and the roads were so dangerously slippery because the EPA didn't allow the chemicals to eat away at the snow. I hate driving in Michigan. As soon as you get over the border, it's treacherous terrain.

I'm a die hard libertarian (lowercase L) and adore Atlas Shrugged, so my response should come as no surprise to anyone that knows about those ideals.

The problem... ALL economic problems, in fact, stem from INTERFERENCE in the market by the government. There should be a separation between government and economy just as there is separation between church and state. Once the people are completely free to do what they wish with the land and resources that they have, then the economy will start moving again.

But in modern America, ESPECIALLY in a "blue state" like Michigan, they have years and years worth of legislation and rules that say "you can't put this business here, you have to put it there" or "if you open up this business, you have to pay these fees and follow these rules". The more rules you have, the HARDER it is to start a business. And businesses, in the end, are what give people JOBS, not the government.

Adam Smith's invisible hand WORKS, as long as the government isn't there smacking it in this direction or that.

The pure free market is a balanced equation naturally. As soon as you use an outside force to unbalance it, you will forever play a balancing act for all eternity. The only way to re-balance it is to get out of the way and let nature take its course.

That's my not so humble opinion, at least.

I fully agree that Michigan has THE worst roads in the USA as well as the worst drivers. It's not because they can't use the chemicals it has more to do with the fact that nothing much ever gets done in this state.

Well, I guess that is why Michigan fails.
