That's messed up.

The parents should not be allowed to breed anymore.

It makes me laugh.

(It's pretty cool, actually. But hey, my morals are more messed up than the moron who believes Methuselah was 900 and something years old. Sorry, only Yoda can get close to that.)

as a smoker, I can tell you. This kid was taught to smoke. Smoking is tricky, its not something you just pick up, you have to practice. smoking is one thing, smoking and inhaling is another. you can mimick smoking as a kid (candy ciggys anyone?) but it takes time to learn to inhale the proper amount, without causing your lungs to seize.
aka, if you inhale too much, or too deeply it hurts. (as any smoker with hicups can tell you). If this kid smokes, he has been taught, and he has had alot of practice with it. A two year would take one hit off a cigg, gag, cry, and never do it again. That is of course assuming he had figured out how to light one (or that he needed to in the first place). For a two year old, (or any child) to learn to smoke, they have to know how to hold the cigg, how to light it, how to inhale, how much to inhale and how long to hold it before exhailing. IMHO this would be impossible without someone teaching him. If this is a cultural thing (yes people let their kids smoke, and doctors way back when used to encourage it for health reasons) I would try to be understanding, but since the child is also obese, I can only assume its because of parental abuse/neglect. Sick.

I used to smoke myself and it's still better to quit smoking via cold turkey. Kiwi, you're right. This toddler was taught to smoke by seeing his parents or any other adult around him doing it.

However, after reading this... I'm just mortified to see a two-year-old (I don't care which country this kid is from) smoking two packs a day.

Truth be told, this child will not live to see his adult years. If he does, then he's got some good angels watching over him.

I wonder how the two year old got to the cigarettes in the first place?

If that were my child I would have just let him suffered without them and eventually he'll get used to not having them.

I knew how to smoke since I was about five years old because I saw my aunt do it so I would try and get to her lit cigarettes after she be done with them and I was always caught before I could even try. Perhaps that's how the baby started and they didn't catch him in time and he got himself addicted when he puffed on it. But the mother should still have let him suffered by not giving in and he would have gotten over it.

Unfortunately, the attention probably feeds the addiction. Words say one thing, but to someone poor and uneducated, the actions of the curious say another. What incentive do his parents really have to go through the hard work of helping the toddler break the addiction? And seriously hard work it would be. A car? Compared to reporters and fame?

I'm feeling really guilty for watching the video and reading the article. Seriously. I realized I made myself part of the problem.

How are you part of the problem? :? It's not your kid and you didn't do anything to cause it and what can you do about it to even stop it or to prevent it from happening?

how are these kids in 3rd world countries affording 2 packs per day  ?

even adults in economically thriving countries prolly wouldn't buy 2 packs a day for their kids even if it wasn't both harmful and unethical.

Yet another thing to anger me about humans. Another example of why I continue to NOT FEEL like a human being. I always feel myself standing outside the world, shaking my head at it, rolling my eyes, and tallying yet another thing on my LONG list of things I HATE about humans.

If people read the stories, the reporters keep going there. If the reporters keep going there, the parents have incentive to continue to allow their child to smoke.

I've read a lot about this story in various articles. It is common for young children to smoke in Indonesia. Many of these parents do not even have access to information that smoking is bad for you, shockingly. There are not public information campaigns. When asked if it was hurting him, his mother said, "No, but it's too expensive." She further said she doesn't know what else to do because it is the only way to stop him from crying and he throws up when she witholds the cigs. She further said that his tantrums were so intense that once she threw him up against a wall and he had to get stitches. So, she's afraid to withdraw cigs.

So, no action will be taken against this mother, sadly.

I think Ardi's parents wanted their 15 minutes of fame. And they are child abusers. How else did the kid learn to smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette? The Marlboro man?

I wonder how the world will react if it sees a 2-year-old boy drinking a bottle of Bud Light.
