If they were to make real names a requirement it would lead to an increase in stalking and other forms of harrassment.

Anyone got some hosting space?
It would be the perfect time to start opening some "The Official Unofficial forum of <insert game name here>" sites.

Advertise the heck out of it... you could make a fortune.

Otherwise there are two ways to look at this issue.

1. If you don't like the controversy, don't read the forums.
2. If you don't want your real name posted, don't post on the forums.

That said, it's the companies right to change their policies... they have a right to require RealID.. And the gamers have a right to boycott either the game, the official forums, or both.
