Take this with a grain of salt, though - I live in California, and I have an iphone and AT&T is my carrier. Perhaps a little resentment is leaking through. I would change carriers if I could.
A phone needs a network, but Apple has no special allegiance with AT&T. They'd probably be putting the iPhone on all the American networks, just as they have with most of Europe, if they didn't still have an exclusivity contract with them.
But hey, I can buy an unlocked iPhone 4 straight from Apple over here
