I really hate politics. Its simply the exchange of power as currency, and is inherently dishonest. The idea of a North American Union is very distasteful to me. What are your thoughts on such a concept? Also I'm interested in what Inuyasha thinks about that

Well if the EU is the model for what merging countries looks like, then HELL NO! Mexico has expressed interest in a North American union, but merging with them would be like accepting a liver transplant from a donor that died of ebola. The Mexican politicians just want someone else to take responsibility for and dump money into the internal problems they have caused for generations, then dump the blame on Americans and Canadians when it becomes evident their situation is hopeless. Mexican politicians also see it as the perfect way to unload their unemployed peasants and criminals to go be someone else's problem. Their street gangs and cartels would run free across the country and bring a level of firepower not normally available at an American gun store with them (most of their guns come from central America or defecting police and soldiers). In whatever congress or parliament is set up for North America, Mexico can be expected to demand huge concessions and offer nothing in return.

The US and Canada are culturally similar enough to work together on a day-to-day basis, but making a political system that is compatible between the two countries would be a problem.
How much of the budget gets placed into healthcare and social services?
How much goes into defense?
How do we handle the dirtier jobs in the war on terror?
What would the tax rate be?
How would drug laws be handled?
How would gay marriage be addressed?
Do we give the UN any influence in domestic policy or participate in the world court? That would not go over well in the US.
Do we have free speech or hate speech laws regulated by a tribunal?
What would gun laws be like? Our constitution bans any treaty that infringes on these last two.
How much do we back Israel?
How do we handle Iran?
Would the British Crown still have any influence in this new system? That would never fly in the US.
How would we handle environmental policy? There is a pretty big rift between a lot of Americans and Canadians.
Would Canada have to tighten it's immigration laws?
How is political power divided and balanced in the new system?

 I like that liver transplant analogy. Those are all relevant points and pretty similar to my thoughts on the whole matter. I don't honestly thing a Union would be a good idea at all, I think even NAFTA is not beneficial to our countries. And unionizing with Mexico would probably slump the new NAU economy big time. And what you said about the weapons that they would bring... that is really true, and really scary

A treaty for economic cooperation might work, but trying to merge two societies might be impractical. NAFTA was just a cheap trick to give away what was some halfway decent jobs to Mexicans for next to nothing. Their trucks are poorly maintained, they are crappy drivers and I try to keep distance from them if possible, and if there is a really epic accident that shuts down a freeway, it's usually safe to assume a NAFTA driver did it and you usually turn out to be right.

If the world was a neighborhood block, Mexico would be the equivalent of drunk white trash next door neighbors that leave messes everywhere and doesn't respect your property, and frequently gets visited by the cops.
