Nuclear disasters in progress...

Don't forget fusion power is also nuclear power and it's really safe energy.
Fusion only has one problem -- all our current methods require more energy input than we would get out.

Atomic fission is what keeps the earth's core hot and molten so it can generate a magnetic field to protect us.
Actually, it's residual heat from the formation of the earth. And some from radioactive decay, but that isn't quite the same as fission.

They didn't. If they had, I doubt there would have been any problem.
They had barrels under a tent with some trees somewhat close by. They knew this, they had people doing fire mitigation stuff all over the place, but they didn't bother to cut down those trees. They also knew about wildfires, and a very large fire about 10 years ago actually got into the town and burned a number of houses down. If their tent+barrel setup was dangerous, they would have known it and would at least have cut down those trees and moved at least some of the barrels.
The real danger from that fire was understood by everyone who was actually there, if not by the news media. The real danger was of part or all of the town burning down. Nobody's house in Los Alamos burned down this time.
