In Wisconsin -- yes, the same state where lawmakers have introduced a bill penalizing single mothers for being unmarried -- a Republican state representative has come out against divorce for any reason -- even domestic abuse.

Instead of leaving an abusive situation, women should try to remember the things they love about their husbands, Representative Don Pridemore said. "If they can re-find those reasons and get back to why they got married in the first place it might help," he told a local news station.

Pridemore -- who, coincidentally, is a co-sponsor of Republican state Senator Glenn Grothman's "being single causes child abuse" bill as well as a controversial voter ID bill that was ruled unconstitutional earlier this week -- also said that while he thinks women are capable of caring for a family "in certain situations," fathers are the only ones who provide structure and discipline. If they don't grow up with married biological parents, Pridemore says, "kids tend to go astray."

Grothman, for his part, continues to defend his controversial bill. Now, though, not only is single parenthood a factor in child abuse, women in particular are to blame for it.

"There's been a huge change over the last 30 years, and a lot of that change has been the choice of the women," Grothman said.

i am afraid that this is not what i think... a joke.

it must be very mentally ill people who come up with this kind of nonsense. they should be put away. they are very dangerous.

That sounds more like typical right wing probably religious idiocy..besides what makes you think us mentally ill people want the ignorant fool who came up with this stupid bill lumped together with us? I am sure all my mentally ill friends would also agree its a stupid policy.

Personally, I tend to believe anyone that blames a victim of domestic abuse is an abuser themselves.

As this is aimed at single mothers and divorced women - who more often than not become part of the underclass - I think this can be chalked up to the GOP's war on the poor.

It's funny how conservative Republicans are so easy to attack when they come out with their true and honest heart-felt beliefs.

Republican dumbassery.

Gotta hate it.

I say let his wife beat the crap out of him every day for a few hours a day. See how he likes it.

It's so easy to place the blame entirely on one person or group. :(

If someone is only drawn to dominating, abusive men, then they are better off alone. Some women just don't 'go' for the nice guys, or cannot see through an act until it is too late.
Why do so many women feel they 'Gotta have a man'? This legislation seems to push this kind of thinking.

of course, a non abuser would be rightly disgusted at such a bill. Such people that go around calling abused women "button pushers" equally give me the creeps. If a woman is such a crazymaker that she compels a man to hit her, the reasonable thing for that man to do is leave.

The bills that are being passed in this country lately are really freaking me out. Things are moving rather quickly towards a really nasty situation.

As it's a presidential election year, and the GOP seems to be running ever faster behind the craziest idiot toward the edge of the cliff, the Republicans at the state level are trying to out crazy each other. I know, that doesn't make much sense. But then again, I suppose you'd have to be crazy yourself to understand the logic - or lack thereof.
