If his daughter's illness is of sufficient gravity to cause him to withdraw--and I will accept that this is, indeed, the case--then that raises a question about whether he could have pursued a presidential campaign or four years in the White House.

It is he, not his daughter, who is the candidate, to be sure. But it is also he that would rush to her bedside during a medical crisis.

I wish all the best for his little girl Bela. But you have to consider that Santorum had been planning to cut medical coverage for children who don't have rich daddies. I seriously have to wonder, how does he reconcile this with his concern for his daughter's health.

I'm not breathing any sigh of relief over this development. Though his candidacy highlighted the problems Romney has had in winning over the evangelical & "tea party" base, Santorum was really just a huge distraction. Now that he's freed from having to pander so much to the hard right, Romney has plenty of time to tack toward the center & recover what he's lost in terms of support from women & independents.

The problem is that he's going to win, in spite of all the self-destructive tendencies of his party. Think whatever we want of the lukewarm support of the Republican base, they'll all hold their noses & vote for him in November. And make no mistake about this: a Romney presidency will be an extremely conservative one. With the Republicans all but certain to take the Senate & more likely than not to hold the House, we're in for a rocky ride. Our future may not necessarily be a theocracy, but it's looking more & more like conservative authoritarianism.

No-freaking-kidding. I guess his response is that everyone should go into politics??? roflol

Yes-- We probably are headed for four more years of conservative authoritarianism. Still better than theocracy.

You know what really scares me?? No matter who wins, the people lose. They're all corrupt. None of them represent us-- none of them even can, because they have less idea of what it's like to be common than I have of what it's like to be NT.

My sister & I called Santorum "Rick Sanitation."

But since he's putting family first, of which I see this as acceptable too, is there a possibility
we may see Santorum run again for the 2016 presidential campaign? If he does so, then yes.

My prediction for 2016 is Clinton vs. Christie. Fatboy didn't run this time because he knows the GOP has no chance in 2012.

But I'm not worried, because Clinton will beat him. :)

RIP, affordable health care- we hardly knew ye. :( the repubs should at least have the basic human decency of passing euthenasia laws, so those of us who can't afford to get repaired at the doc's office don't have to suffer- after all, they shoot horses, don't they?

If they were more often on the receiving end of suffering, they might have a different take on the matter.

I have to wonder - just how many of them will really, REALLY be surprised at getting their just desserts?

god knows that some people can't handle the truth all at once, so god [in god's infinite wisdom] lets these people skate by for a lifetime, and saves the moral medicine for the next lifetime. so i believe those clueless one-[life]time captains of the universe WILL be genuinely surprised at their negative turn of events in the next lifetime. the arrogant [who believe they are above the golden rule] ignore what they can't immediately sense, at their own peril.

I used to feel bad for the worm I used when I went fishing, until one day, I decided to rescue bait worms and put them in my garden. 30 min later, I checked on my worms, only to find they were being brutally attacked by fire ants. Either way they were destined to be tortured and eaten. Now I like to think bait worms are evil politicians in a past life

nature is a mean mother. our nation is divided between those who wish to tame said mean mother, versus those who revel in mother's meanness and want her to be even meaner to those out of favor.

I was a Santorum supporter. I'm sad to see him go. If things hadn't gone just right for Romney, Santorum would be the front-runner. The biggest thing is the Michigan primary. Had that been scheduled for one week after Santorum's surprise triple victory, Romney would have been beat in Michigan, probably by double digits. Santorum probably would have won Arizona too. That would have devastated Romney and allowed Santorum's great momentum to not only be renewed, but also to be enhanced. Nobody talks about this though.
