Glad someone else was bothered by the misuse of the word "clip" as well.
That CNN article called them "magazine clips". I guess just calling them magazines would sound like the kind you read.
The odd thing is, the word magazine originally was used in reference to military stores of munitions and existed in the 1500s. The term for the periodicals was coined much later if memory serves me right.
