Not as a trap or trick question: Should, say, the people of France be ashamed of France for their constant incursions the Francophone Africa without bothering to inform the United Nations well after begun their assault? And this merely to assure their own puppet governments are properly installed? Should they be concerned about the lack of interest from most of their press about such activities (a press which is more heavily regulated, and more government owned then the United States)? Should they be ashamed about the massive power the French president has (the French presidency has been compared to a monarchy and is much more powerful then the executive branch of the United States of America)? Should their own high government officials being bribed by Saddam Hussein (perhaps partially leading to the deaths of untold amounts of people, possibly even more then have died since the invasion of Iraq) make them ashamed of France?

I could mention other countries (Russia, China are even more obnoxious examples), but I will focus in on supernationalist France.

Somewhat proud, we suck less than the average nation and we have our strengths as well.

I am proud to be an American. That does not mean I am a rabid nationalist who goes about shouting "my country is better than yours" as I make plans to take over the world. While I disagree with practically 99% of everything my government does, I am not walking about with my head low, muttering "woe is me, a guilty American Capitialist. America is a terrible country, absolutely terrible."

Being an American is more than liking/hating President Bush or government policies. America is an ideal, one that millions of people sacrifice everything for a chance to get it. I think it still does represent the Land of Opportunity (unless we socialize the hell out of it, at which point it would become the Land of Gimme-Gimme) and that is why so many people are trying to get into America. (Not about to get into a discussion on immigration, though.)

And even if we socialize everything because no one has their head on straight, I would still be proud to be an American; I would just do everything in my power to change it.

I suppose this sentiment might make me a target for name calling and other ad hominem attacks, but oh well.

I feel lucky to be an American-there are far worse places to live (I actually live in Canada now, but I'm still a citizen of the U.S and I grew up there); I'm proud of being part of the oldest and longest running modern democracy. America has done (and continues to do) some terrible things, but other nations and leaders have done far worse-for instance, brutal dictators like Pol Pot, Stalin, and Mao who were responsible for the deaths of millions of people. Or corrupt and brutal dicators in African and Latin American countries in the '70's and '80's who where also responsible for the widespread murder of their people. I do not understand all the hatred being directed at America and its government right now in light of all the other atrocities going on in the world. If we directed half the passion and anger that's being directed at America to, say, Sudan, we might actually be able to do something about the genocide in Darfur (I should note the U.S has done more to help than any other country).

My thoughts exactly. Yeah, our country has problems, but it could be worse. Besides, I have no shame. :D

If America is so bad, then why the hell does everyone want to come here and live??? Oh yeah, we are the land of gimme-gimme....

If you want to save the world's problems, let the movie stars do it like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Ever wonder why movie stars help other countries other than their own? Maybe it's bc they know the people in timbucktoo didn't do it to themselves, but a result of piss poor government who cannot take care of their own people.

Here in America, we are the land of opportunity and people have the opportunity to take care of themselves, but they don't...they ask for free this and that from our government. Excessive welfare and healthcare for the "needy" are bleeding this country dry. Drug addicts and lazy people who don't want to work in this country drive me insane

...With this cycle of crap going on in the US and bleeding heart liberals wanting us to help this person and that person, NO WONDER the US government feels they gotta police everyone in the world. The goverrnment is damned if they do and damned if they don't help a country in need. Especially their own.

Am I proud to be an American? Yes, I have so many freedoms that so many do not have in the world. As far as proud of American culture of today?...No. Just read the tabloids.

I highly doubt that merely overthrowing the government will resolve anything at all. In fact, I think it would make things worse. Now, I am all for changing the way things work right now, but that is more an evolution rather than a revolution.
