I don't understand why Russia is so homophobic
First off, Gays were oppressed by the Orthodox Chuch in Tsarist times. The Communists actively recruited gay people into their ranks, then Stalin purged them out when he came into power. Officially, there were no gay people in the Soviet Union until Glasnost under Gorbachev indicated that there might possibly be gay people in Russia.
After Communism fell, Russia was essentially wide open for essentially anything and everything due to the fact that the country was literally broke due to the mismanagement of the communists.
Granted, Putin is restoring order the the country, and making it prosperous, but he's essentially relying on restoring the old powers of Russia in order to do this, namely the strict policing, legacy communist era laws and legal system, and allowing The Church free reign.
I can understand he really doesn't have much to work with, but at the same time I think that restoring The Church to a place of prominence in Russia is a really bad move on his part.
--A lot of the hatred of Gay people in Russia stems from the fact that the Orthodox Church has always had a very dim view of homosexuality, naturally this trickles down to the gopniks in the video harrassing the gay kid.
