This is a joke, right?

Short list:

Beast - Episcopalian
Jean Grey - Episcopalian
Rogue - Southern Baptist
Gambit - Catholic
Nightcrawler - Catholic
Cyclops - Protestant
Invisible Woman - Episcopalian
Human Torch - Episcopalian
Black Widow - Russian Orthodox
Hulk - Catholic
Captain America - Protestant
Daredevil - Catholic
Punisher - Catholic (trained to be a priest)
Spider-Man - Protestant

So basically all of Marvel's best known, most popular, heroes are Christian (or, in the case of teams, have a significant number of Christians).

Much bigger list at http://www.adherents.com/lit/comics/comic_book_religion.html.

How do you know this? I must admit I hardly spend a lot of time reading comics. But I have never seen any mainstream comics that are anything other than strictly secular. I'm from Missouri; show me.

He posted a link. As a librarian, shouldn't you do the research yourself?

I suppose I'm just not smart enough to read comics or watch TV.

While the main point of superhero comics hasn't been to promote one religion or another, there has never been any attempt by Marvel or DC to denigrate Christianity or any other religion, either. Trust me, I grew up with comics.

Bill, watch the first video so thoughtfully presented for our consideration. The ONLY religion respectfully treated there is the Deformed Church of Political Correctness.

Again, if Marvel does create a Muslim superhero, they will be taking their lives into their own hands unless they treat Islam more respectfully than they treat Christianity.

Dude, if you're referring to the Venture Bros. clip I posted, THAT WAS SATIRE. :P

The second clip, Captain America/Avengers was not disrespectful at all... :?

Call it what you want, but if Islam is treated that way, there will be hell to pay. I'm not religious myself. Nor do I care for Islam. But it is indecent to be disrespectful toward ANY religion, even if you call it "satire".

Why? Why is religion more deserving of respect than other topics?

Librarian-

That first clip was from a satirical cartoon called The Venture Bros. which airs on Adult Swim (late night Cartoon Network), and not Marvel or DC comics, and in no way represents the mainstream comic book industry today.
If you doubt what I'm saying, then go to a comic book store and buy a stack of comics, or just do research on the internet.
And by the way, there is a bigot who has put out his own Anti-Islamic comic book called Pigman, about a guy who fights Muslims while dressed in a pig suit made of real pig skin. I only know of him through The Daily Show, and have never seen his comic book at any comic book shop, or sold under any major comic book label.
Incidentally, you're maybe just the second Aspie I know of who doesn't like comic books or superheroes. Most of our tribe seem to love neurotic, misunderstood, often physically weak nerds who suddenly find super powers thrust upon them to do good.

It is one thing to criticize issues with rational pretensions, such as politics; it is another to criticize somebody's sacred beliefs based on faith. So, let me throw the question right back at you: Why do you wish to stir up hatred and discord? Doesn't the word "jerk" describe such people?

I am against PC. Are you arguing that PC is as valid a religion as Christianity or Judaism? Or could it be the case that PC is liberalism masquerading in sacred drag?

I have no interest in stirring up anything. I just don't think that certain sets of ideas should be exempt from the same treatment we give others (including, sometimes, mockery) just because they fall under the category of religion.

Besides which, it's always seemed to me that those who take religion too seriously stir up a lot more hatred than those who don't take it seriously enough.

Is it okay to mock the mentally ret*d or the austistic? Or would doing so make one a jerk? Are there some things that just shouldn't be done?

As far as hatred in concerned, religion is a piker compared to communism and fascism, both secular movements that despised traditional religion. Or is there some kind of moral equivalency to be draw between Mother Teresa, Hitler, and Stalin?

What about that Jesus guy? His books sell pretty well as far as I know, and there are lots of fans of him?

I recommend you to never watch the "Life of Brian".

You will have to tell me which books Jesus wrote. If you are talking about the Bible, it is the best-selling book in history--hands-down. But we are talking about comic books.

PC isn't a religion - rather it's just a form of public politeness. To be sure, it has been taken to extremes when the truth is swept under the rug for the sake of uber politeness, but the general intention behind it is good.

Bill though it is not scriptural, Christians have long accepted the proverb that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. In secular terms what we are referring to is sincerity. It should be noted that Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler were all sincere in their beliefs. It hardly means their beliefs were good. While PC is hardly at the level of Stalinism, its intentions and its results are two different things.

Again, I would encourage you to familiarize yourself with cultural Marxist Antonio Gramsci's Theory of Cultural Hegemony. Its major premise is that the elites will always structure a society's beliefs in a manner advantageous to them, and disadvantageous to everybody else. PC is a secular religion that is structured to benefit the elites, and nobody else. What is ironic is that those who created PC did so with the aid of Gramsci's theory; they created what they swore to oppose, namely another elitist system.

So being religious is not being religous. And not being religious IS being religious. And respecting all religions is being religously intolerent, while favoring one religous is not favoring one religion. And black is white, and red is green, and one plus one equals seventeen, and......
