Well it was china and the station was probably jam packed.I still don't understand why a group of guys didn't jump him as soon as he stabbed his first victim. Than agian, this is the same country where a man hit a child and than ran over he  r again to kill her so he wouldn't be responsible for her medical bills. Not exactly the most selfless people in the world.

Unless you're counting alcoholic beverages as a drug, the majority isn't on mind altering drugs. Even those who do partake in casual drinking spend comparatively very little time under the influence.

I am not convinced that more of these people carrying guns around in public will lead to more civility, and less crime. I think it will lead to more people reaching for the holsters when they get into an altercation, and the other guy won't back down.

The issuance of firearm carry permits is up and violent crime has been going down. I won't say that the downward trend in violent crime is do to more people packing heat but it doesnt seem to have driven the crime rate up, either.

These considerations are not, I believe, outweigh'd by an increased potential for armed citizens to take out bad guys.

If by bad guys you mean active shooters, I don't carry a firearm with that purpose in mind but depending on the situation I may elect to engage an active shooter if in the highly unlikely event that I actually encounter one. I am not at all interested in being a hero but on the other hand I won't stand idly by and watch the innocent get massacred if I can stop it. Johnny Cop can't be everywhere all the time nor do we want him to be since he's more likely to be an over-authoritative nuisance than an asset if the lead starts flying.

Too bad you weren't there.

If there were no guns or knives people would just beat each other to death with sticks instead.

If I have to be attacked, I would rather take my chances against knives, clubs, sticks, or even crayons, than any firearm. I would imagine anyone who has ever been shot to death would think they had a better chance of defending themselves had the attacker not had a gun. Personally, I feel like if a person carries around the mentality that there is always someone out there wanting to harm them, just that thought alone will increase the odds of being a victim of violence. I would not own a gun for a million dollars, and even having had a shotgun pressed against my nose on three separate occasions has not caused me to look at society as more violent or unsafe. I have no fear of going any place I need to go or saying anything I need to say, to anyone at anytime.

I guess they do things a little bit different in China.

This brings back an argument I had once with someone who was anti-gun, claiming that knives wouldn't be able to kill as many people as a gun wielding school shooter.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, I rest my case. This proves that even if america went completely anti-gun, knives would still do the damage. And i might add, knives are easier to conceal than a gun, and quicker to use, and instead of having a gun to warn off such an attacker, you'd have to physically stop them, which also puts you at risk.

So, anti-gun advocates, what's your argument now?

I would still rather take my chances against someone with a knife than someone with a gun, any day of the week. And there are very few actual "anti-gun advocates." Rather there are people who think we can do better to deal with gun violence than to just put more guns on the streets, That is a defeatist attitude. Better to deal with the issues in society that create situations in which gun violence arises. But, yeah, I know as soon as I stick the word "society" into the equation, the pro-gun advocates jump right to the "socialism" mantra.

Horrible tragedy, but we learn things by experience I suppose, and today some have learned that a lack of guns doesn't stop violent acts.

Please do edit that, so it doesn't look like a contradiction was stated by me alone.

You do realize that people who use guns to harm others don't give a rats *ss about gun laws, right? If they don't get it through official channels they'll just get it by other means. All your control law ideals will do is keep law abiding citizens from protecting themselves properly. If everyone is armed, people are going to think twice before f**king with somebody, that's a fact. You wouldn't try to rob someone if you thought they had a gun on them. Criminals aren't stupid, and they don't give a sh*t about anything but themselves.

Yeah, right. I think Florida is a good example of what happens when "everyone" is armed. People will begin to say they feel threatened by a twitching eyeball. Our society has far too many people with anti-thin/that attitudes who would take full advantage of an opportunity to blow some LGBT person, some Atheist, someone of a different religion or race. American society is too unhinged to go that route.

You're blowing it way out of proportion here.

1. Even if florida were that way, taking away the ability for law abiding citizens to carry weapons is not going to stop criminals from getting hold of them, as I've stated. Again, you'll only be depriving people from means of protecting themselves.

2. You cannot possibly judge how an entire nation will act when they are so armed, based on one state, and even in that one state, only a certain number of people within that state, we're talking only hundreds, if not thousands, in relation to millions of people.

Saying that an entire nation of people would go up in arms against each other because of intolerance and ignorance is just a bullsh*t scare tactic used by anti-gun advocates in order to sell the idea of disarming america, it has nothing to do with the reality of the situation.
People are already killing each other using illegal arms, that's not going to change just because a law is passed, they don't give a sh*t about laws, they'll go straight to the black market, or ask a friend about getting a gun (who likely has connections themselves), it happens all the time.

If your trying to bring up the Travon Martin / George Zimmerman incident that's already been discussed to death in these forums. What makes you think everyone in Florida or any another state is armed?

Given all the guns and carry permits that are in circulation, if you were right the streets would be running red with blood.
They're not.

So tell me, why didn't these five (or possibly more) knife-wielding terrorists use guns or bombs instead of knives? Were they not really terrorists, and deliberately limited their own capacity to cause harm? Or could they, maybe, not get access to guns? Hmmmm....

Again, " taking away the ability for law abiding citizens to carry weapons" is not the primary objective of gun regulation advocates. " Taking away the ability for law abiding citizens to carry weapons " is the propaganda line of the gun lobby and NRA to scare gun owners into taking their side and buy more and more guns. No one is trying to take away your right to defend yourself. That is blowing things out of proportion. There may be a few individuals who feel that way, but it is not the intent of the LIberal agenda to take away your right to defend yourself. What is needed is to curb this gun fetishism and paranoia that is driven by the propagandists who care less about your right to defend yourself with a gun than they do about their ability to sell as many guns and pieces of gun related gadgetry as possible. It is not about your right to defend yourself. Its about the gun industry getting rich by spreading fear, and making people feel threatened to go out in public. The number of AR15 sales in the past two years have nothing to do with self defense. It has to do with the scare tactics and lies (brainwashing tactics) the gun lobby and NRA are feeding our society with their continuous stream of propaganda, which I find revolting. These people care little to nothing about making America a safer place to live. The people who manage the NRA and gun lobby are more mentally unstable and dangerous to the safety of American society than any group of "bad men with guns."

Access to what weapon is irrelevant, 29 f*ing people still died, and that was with a knife for god's sake, that proves right there that gun control will not stop such violence, nor their severity.

It proves nothing of the sort. Do you think that 5 men opening up with semi-automatic guns in a crowded public transport would have been limited to 29 dead? Seriously?
The military arms its soldiers with guns because guns make it very easy to kill people. They don't limit their soldiers to swords or knives any more.

besides which, the post I was responding to was entirely about access, claiming that 'bad guys' will have access to guns while 'good guys' will not.

No one is trying to take away your right to defend yourself 1. It has to do with the scare tactics and lies (brainwashing tactics) the gun lobby and NRA are feeding our society with their continuous stream of propaganda, which I find revolting 2. These people care little to nothing about making America a safer place to live. The people who manage the NRA and gun lobby are more mentally unstable and dangerous to the safety of American society than any group of "bad men with guns." 3

1. I didn't say people are trying to take away our right to defend ourselves, I said they're taking away our ability to do so, there's a difference.

2. I find the scare tactics of anti-gun advocates and lobbyists more revolting, claiming wild things like you have here today such as "people will be killing each other left and right" and the like. It's utterly absurd and yet people believe it.

3. That is a false statement and honestly it borderlines on slander.

1. We aren't talking about 5 men, we're talking about 1 guy.

2. Less people have died from semi-auto fire on separate occasions than this, largely because guns make noise, knives do not.

3. Criminals don't care where they get the weapons, nor what weapons are used, they'll take advantage of any situation where they can do the most damage and nothing you do can ever change that, short of isolating everyone in separate places to minimize casualties. The method is irrelevant, how many lives are lost is, and since this guy pulled it off with a f*ing knife, it's blatantly obvious that it can be done without the help of a firearm or explosive, since it just happened.

Clearly all knives in the world should be banned, for killing people
