when we cease to be bothered by them, then we will get more of them.

The responsible decision would be to just give him an honorable discharge and access to psychiatric care off base. It probably would never have happened.

there are many homeless vets who are not being given the care they need and richly deserve. we use 'em all up and then throw 'em away, it seems plain.

Talk about mixing yer metaphors.

God throwing up his own hands ( in despair presumably).

How is that a 'mixed metaphor'?

maybe in terms of combining human [hands] and godlike [no need for hands] attributes.

This kind of thing is not new. When I was in Korea in the 80's a soldier (Army) took out 4 or 5 of his unit while they were at the rabge doing annual qualifying, from foxholes. EVERYONE was armed and he still did this. Even with the range officer (armed) standing behind everyone. The shooter emptied his magazine, was taken down by those around him and then taken to the hospital (where I worked) to the psychiatric ward. He was processed for permanent mental disability, and as far as I know is now collecting money for his actions.

His excuse? "God told him to do it."

Also while I was stationed in Korea in the same time period during annual training, a unit of Marines that were in convoy to the airport to deploy back to their home base in the United States, one of the marines, in the rear of a deuce and a half, going through the middle of a small town, stuck his rifle out and shot an elderly Korean woman in the head who was walking on the sidewalk. As far as I remember, he was expedited from the country without facing punishment for his actions. I don't know if there was a settlement made by the U.S. government. It is not a safe assumption to believe that members of the military walking around their bases constantly armed is a rational decision. Human beings are unpredictable creatures, no matter who well trained and disciplined we may think certain ones to be. During my 11 years active duty I would not have felt comfortable at any place I was stationed had everyone been walking around with loaded weapons 24/7. It is not a smart idea.

They kind of are. Millions die in the 3rd world of various prosaic causes, no one bats an eyelash, but a handful of Westerners get shot and...

Now the media is blaming anger issues. Seems the shooter had a heated argument right before he started shooting. Probably won't be any backlash this time.

But the shooter here was never in any active combat, at least that what all the reports say.

You do not have to be active in war to receive PTSD. PTSD is emotional. Life events can give serious PTSD

That would be easy to understand if he was ever exposed to the wounded, or traumatized people.

Maybe because as Westerners we can relate to them more, they're Americans so they come from the same area we do. 3rd World, on the other hand, we don't know enough about them and it's so common so....yeah

Interesting article. So apparently this guy's answer to dealing with his anger towards the Sandy Hook shooting and the media hoopla surrounding the shooter was to go on a shooting spree himself?

That's a new one. Mind you, that's gonna hurt my head for a while.
