Yeah, that was my first thought, too. The article makes no mention of the reason.

Anyway, at the risk of being flamed, I'm going to say that I don't see how shooting is inherently a more cruel way to kill a dog than an injection. It's messy, of course, but surely a good shotgun shot to the head would kill anyone instantly and, therefore, painlessly? Obviously, this particular "hitman" did a very poor job of it and the owner was wrong to use someone unskilled, but as far as I know it's quite common to put down horses and cattle by shooting them, so why not a dog?

I don't think shooting a dog to put it down is necessarily worse than having them put to sleep...in some situations it might even be better so they don't have to go through the ordeal of being brought to some strange place, being dealt with by strange people and being in unfamiliar sterile environment being their last memories. With shooting it you could give them a nice steak or something let them enjoy that and then do the deed. Though provided the animal is not in extreme pain I see nothing wrong with letting them die naturally when its time.

But yeah I'd like to know why the dog was being put down in the first place, makes me sad to think animals are put down when they don't need to be...I wonder if the person had taken this dog to the shelter if they would have done it no questions asked, or if they would have actually assessed the dogs health and determined it didn't need to be put down.

There is a vet here that will make house calls to put down a sick or old pet,it's worth the extra cost to let the animal pass somewhere it's comfortable and not afraid.
When our old weenie dog was put down becuse his heart was giving out and he was having trouble breathing,he was so scared at the vets,he knew something bad was going to happen. If I had known another vet did house calls at the time,I would have used her.

I know with the Humane Society you can surrender a dog for euthanasia but that has to be specified and paperwork has to be done for that. Otherwise, a surrendered dog is taken in, evaluated, and put up for adoption. I think SPCA works the same. Personally, I'd insist on being with my dog during a euthanasia all the way to the end. Failing that, I do it myself in the back yard with a pistol shot to the back of the head.

I was with Bluto when the vet put him down, there is no way I'd leave him alone. Then he was brought home and buried. He would have wanted to go home.

Take him up to the top with service elevator then drop him 700 ft

Animal cannibalism is more common than we think , it's not just piranhas......even seagulls can eat their off spring if they're desperate for food , sad but such is nature.
