I could be wrong, but I don't think "Anonymous" is like a club where you just tell them you want to join, and they say OK.
They are pretty secretive, and most of their "activities" have been pretty successful due to secrecy.
The things I've read about are all illegal, such as overloading a website so it crashes on purpose (denial of service).

While the things they've done have been illegal, you could argue that dos attacks aren't all that different than organising a sit-in or something like that, except when people have sit-ins (which can be just as disruptive), people don't get long jail sentences, where as "hacktivists" have received some pretty harsh jail sentences.

There is a documentary about Anonymous called We Are Legion that might interest you. I remember enjoying it.

I think this is the full documentary here:

Anonymous isn't a real group, it's more of a moniker used by lots and lots of people with different and conflicting goals. It can be manipulated and has.

This is the way I've understood them to be as well. Anyone who feels like participating in "hacktivist" activities can do something and say they're from Anonymous, it's not actually a group of specific people.
