Like I said, it's painless if it's done right. Were those survivors hung with a proper long drop, or an amateurish idea of tying a rope around the neck and a long fall?

Might be confusing atmospheric nitrogen (N2) with nitrous oxide (N20).

You can get nitrogen from an air cylinder or just letting liquid nitrogen evaporate - we have a system that uses LN2 at work, need to be careful around it.

Could also use carbon monoxide to kill. You can turn a car or a lawn mower on in a garage and get that effect.

I was under the impression that because of all the lawsuits, it is cheaper to just let someone stay in prison for the rest of their life than to kill them. Has the added benefit if a mistake was made, they can be released. The state of Illinois did a review of death sentences and with the benefit of DNA testing found many were wrongful convictions.

If you are Catholic, you should remember that Pope John Paul II essentially said, all killing is wrong, including the death sentence, and abortions.

Killing human beings to show that killing is unacceptable is pure, idiotic insanity. It does not deter crime. You have to care enough about humanity to change society. Call it social engineering or whatever you like, but our society refuses to even make an effort to work on finding a way to eradicate or minimize the factors that turn people to doing things which hurt other human beings. Your ideology. "there will always be bad people doing bad things" You cannot get past that mentality. You will not even try.

mediocrity only comprehends itself. that is humanity for you, at least in the American variant.

From point of view of how best to carry out a death sentance

Well the chair is a bit on the barbaric side, why not put them to sleep with a chloroform / nitrous oxide mixture and then when they have passed out shoot them twice in the upper torso and once in the head. That would be more humane than the chair or hanging.

On the otherhand the death penalty has a problem, if wrongly imposed it can not be reversed in any way. Also for the worst criminals like the moors murderers it would offer a quick and easy exit from this world. If you want the likes of those two sickos to experience punishment then a life in jail would work much better.

I think it's a reasonable response to the debacle in Oklahoma:

Clayton Lockett Guardian

They can't risk this happening again.

The only foolproof method of quick, and relatively humane death is decapitation. The guillotine did its job faultlessly in France for almost 200 years.

the double-barreled method is just about the only way proven to immediately extinguish consciousness.

Foolproof? What if the blade is dull? Or something stops the blade from going all the way through? Murphy's law knows no boundaries. :P

It is also quite a barbaric way of taking someones life.

Why do so many people feel sorry for the criminal?
In many cases these people committed horrific crimes. Their victims were bludgeoned, or stabbed, or strangled, raped, etc.
I agree, it would be a good thing to execute quickly. The guillotine was quite efficient.

but not perfect, as there have been cases where multiple tries were necessary. a double-barreled open-choke shotgun blast of double-00 buck to the head, OTOH, is totally reliable.

One could also drop a car on the person. That should be quite reliable too...

A car could be used several times. For a shotgun you would have to pay for the ammo every time

aviation fuel and pilot's time are more expensive, unless you use a crane, in which the crane operator's time and fuel are factors.

True. The car solution is more preposterous, though. :D
