One song from the 60s that I've always liked is the 'Eve of Destruction' by Barry McGuire and its almost as poignant and relevant today as it was when it was written. Some things never change it seems, will we ever learn? I guess that's just the nature of the world, bad things happen and will continue to happen. I was thinking how I would feel back at beginning of the 20th century before the WWI or in the 30s before WWII how it must of seemed like the end of the world was coming, I'm sure plenty of people knew what was over the horizon.

An admirable sentiment in a climate of fear, some things are just beyond our control so there isn't any point letting yourself be controlled by this fear. You just have to roll with the punches, if you let yourself be ruled by this fear then you aren't living much of life anyways and that kind of defeats the point doesn't it?

Not exactly a parody...I posted this after having some to drink, and got distracted at some point before finishing the post. I guess the point is I have a bad feeling about things like the entire political atmosphere or whatever, so I guess I feel people ought to be prepared for the worst....maybe a little too early for the arsenal of weapons, but should worse come to worse self defense could become a necessity.

Well than screw this place I am going home....oh wait...

Once I too thought, Duck and Cover, Cuban Missiles, Gulf of Tonkin, would trigger the last days, but after a while, a natural reaction, I yelled, "Let it Burn!" I just wanted to watch. I was disappointed.

ISIS in Africa is just waiting for warm weather, so they can get Ebola, and fly to America. First it will be toilet seats in the planes, water taps, then in the airports, cab door handles, and jogging to produce WMD Grade sweat.

Also, the 1918 Flu that killed fifty million, was really the 1917 Flu, that hit it big the following year. There is still hope for Ebola.

We do need it, a population reduction of 100,000,000 a year would barely stabilize the population, and it would take twice that to lower the population by a billion over ten years.

Even at 500,000,000 a year, it would take twenty years to get it down to a livable and planet friendly under a billion.

It does not look good as even the most recent world war, took a decade to kill 50,000,000.

Wars, plagues, are but media distractions from the one sure threat, the population will double in ten years.

We are maxed out on food production, have trashed the oceans, and fresh water is already a problem.

This leads to social stress.

Something will happen.

We give this, and twenty trillion in debt, to the next/last generation.

Eh, the future is bright, if we make it there.

What's happening now is nothing more than the turbulance you always get when crossing a boundary, as the conditions between the old and the new clash. Once we're through it, it'll be (fairly) smooth flying, until the next boundary crossing and the new old interests, the former radicals, attempt to cling on to their outdated ways of doing things.

So, I'd say we're in for a rough few decades, but anyone who manages to get through it alive - and there is no good reason why that can't be all of us, not in a world where energy and water literally fall from the sky - we're in for a wonderful life. Heck, if we play our cards right and fund the medical research that we *should* be funding (that is, suspended animation - you have centuries to find a cure for everything else...), that could *literally* be nearly all of us...

I know it's a modern song, in contrast to the others which have been posted, but here's my contribution:


Of course, it could all go... what's a suitable expression? Hell in a self-replicating AI optimised handbasket pile? Some fool could create a virus designed to have a 98% mortality rate - that wouldn't be enough to set us back more than a few centuries, but no-one now would be alive to see it. An anti-technology doomsday cult could take over. A self-improving AI could be developed and instructed to optimise and build handbaskets, taking apart to solar system to build enough computronium to attack it from every possible angle...

But I don't think existential risk have majority odds in the near future, and beond that, we'll have colonies which will serve as backups if Terra should fall. Still, we need something like Firewall to secure, contain and protect humanity from existential threats...
