It's not that cold blooded...
I mean there is plenty of bad things about Ohio, but that isn't it. D.C. also has changed a lot as the middle class and rich have moved back into it.

I asked around for directions and people just looked at me like I was a crook. not a lot of trust or goodwill did I find there then. there was a definite chill.

I don't think the criminal justice system in the states is designed to be rehabilitative, the measures handed out including prison sentences are designed to be punitive. Thus there is little resources invested in protecting prisoners from assault, deprivation of liberty or rape. However 17 yr olds certainly should not be housed with hardened crims.

I am beginning to think 'civilized' may not be the best word for this nation.

mercenary, quasi-fascist would be more apt.

Funny how we still get so many transplants from "civilised" countries to this horrible mercenary, quasi-fascist country of ours.

(clicky)Michigan court says juvenile prisoners can be raped, abused and neglected with no recourse
Michigan imprisoned a number of 17-year-old juveniles with adults, and prison guards and other staff did a terrible job of providing these children sufficient monitoring and protection. These kids were raped and abused by other inmates and even sexually assaulted by guards. In a lawsuit, the plaintiffs claim that Gov. Rick Snyder, the Michigan Department of Corrections, and 15 wardens from Michigan prisons "violated their civil rights— essentially failing to protect an at-risk segment of the prison population and demonstrating 'deliberate indifference to their safety.'" According to the Detroit News:
"The lawsuits describe alleged incidents in which teens were forced into sex acts by adult prisoners through physical violence or the threat of it. In some cases, corrections facility employees are accused of sexual harassment, allowing assaults to happen or ignoring requests for help from teen inmates."
but the Michigan court ruled against them, saying that prisoners don't seek out public services covered by the civil rights law in the way members of the general public do, but "are compelled to be there, and must be content, for the most part, with the services provided." IOW, if you're raped and abused/neglected in a Michigan prison, deal with it. AFAIC, this stinks of fascism. a civilized nation would not allow this to routinely happen.

It's not just Ohioans who find any type of government assistance (or ANY type of help!) shameful. It's a Midwestern mindset. Back when having a full-time job meant you also had health insurance and a backyard pool, it wasn't such a harmful way of thinking. Nowadays, it just prevents a lot of people from accessing help. My elderly parents were reluctant to hire someone to do their housework, even though they pay her entirely out of pocket. My father felt ashamed not to be able to do it all himself.

IOW such [of that type of] stoicism opens the door to fascism.

If we're done being outraged over the savage austerity of Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania maybe we can get back to the topic.

I'd want to know the reasonwhy those adolescents are in an adult prison. If it's some mandatory sentencing BS over dope or whatever and they are non-violent offenders that have been f****d by the system I'd be 100% against them being there. But, it could just be that they really ARE bad apples and only and adult prison can handle them.

It's rather disingenuous to refer to 17 year olds as "children" when they are quite capable of carrying out anything and 18 year old (or older) can. If someone had called me a "child" at 17 I probably would have shot them. Adult and child in this case are only legal terms and have nothing to do with capability.

As far as rape in prison don't look for that to end any time soon or ever. Well, they could go back to working them till they're too tired for anything like that or back to using the sweat box or the strap on them like what they used to back in the day. I can see the American Criminal Liberties Union (ACLU for short) having a cow over even the suggestion of any of the above.

Even if they did have enough guards to watch over everything they guards themselves wouldnt have the inclination to do it effectively. Guards like turmoil and predation within the prison population. That keeps the inmates angry at each other so they won't focus thier combined energies on overpowering the guards and breaking out en masse. Think about it.

...Yes , there are likely some of the raped inprisoned uner-18s who commited majore , even major violent , crimes .
There are doubtless a number of raped adult prisoners who commited major , evn violent , crimes .
You are saying , then , that they should be raped by other prisoners - who , BTW , likely committed , in many cases , major violent crimes as well , pretty likely I'd think , too , at a ratio higher that those they rape ?
Okay , perhaps this is the standard " heh , heh , people in prison who are raped deserve it " .
(Oh , you're arguing that there was no prison rape when there was official corporal/physical punishment in prison ?)

Having reading comprehension issues? I said don't look for anything to be done about it. I thnk it's disgusting but it's not going to be fixed.

What goes on in Russia is the business of the Russians. But since we're talking about prison rape; does Black Dolphin have rape issues?
