You may put your "laws" up your backside. I have extreme contempt for legislators who, acting in an American state, would so badly compromise the Constitution's second amendment, which was written for the express purpose of recognizing the right of the people to overthrow a corrupt government that did not respect their rights. Your contempt of that right impresses me not at all, and your "shoulds" are a pretty good list of ideas that responsible and free people should ignore.
The key word is
responsible. How many truly
responsible people do we have in the world, hmm? We have so many politicians dodging their responsibilities, both in Western and Eastern cultures. Politicians do not seem to care about individual lives, or even the lives of the whole country, but just their little circle of friends and backers.
I am contemptuous of the so-called right to bear arms because people do not take up the responsibility that goes with it. Some
persons do, and I have little quarrel with them. However, most
people don't. Overthrow a corrupt government? I am yet to see anyone do this in America and actually be praised by the people. Messers Booth and Oswald probably were thinking
sic semper tyrannis. But do we see their names shown as outstanding paragons of virtue? (Or for that matter, Brutus, or Robespierre, or those heading the Bolshevik Revolution?) No, because of the most obvious of reasons: they were petty murderers who had delusions of grandeur. And would the overthrow of one government automatically lead to another? History tells us otherwise.
I am not a legislator, or American. I, like Bazza, am Australian. And we can at least see through our governments. And at least with our voting system, there is no room for being apathetic.
In terms of gun laws, me and Bazza are on opposite ends of the same spectrum, but we both act responsibly. He understands guns. He can act responsibly. I can act responsibly by not having them, as I am (and justifiably so) afraid of using them. You may sneer in contempt for my being afraid to use a gun, but I am afraid for deeper reasons than you think.
