Sorry for the unkindness. But that's how I feel.

So how is "Just Say No" damaging to individuals trying to overcome drug addiction?

The response towards drug users was punitive under Nancy and Ronald. Not only did testing become widespread, users were stigmatized afterwards by potential employers. I grew up in a culture of calloused indifference towards drug-users, they were de-humanized. I'm sure Nancy meant well, but the actual outcome of the Regean administration was a decrease in civil liberties.

For people overcoming drug addiction, "just say no" is irrelevant. Presumably if they are trying to stop taking drugs they have already come to that conclusion themselves.

But for society, it was a damaging force. Dividing people and creating a huge market for illegal drugs and the accompanying crime. It marginalized people who were not addicts or dealers and left them with damaging criminal records for no good reason.

What does that have to do with Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" campain?

Drugs, and dealing, were already illegal. Folks had been busted for both for decades before Reagan took office.

You could argue that the whole "war on drugs" from Nixon onward through every president since had the effect you're saying. And still do. But how did "just say no" make it any worse?

Oh yeah...

Brings back memories...

"Zero tolerance"

Impounding your car if they found one leaf in it. Mass incarceration.

They ran out of prison cells, and ran out of car impound lots, so for practical reasons they had to stop the policy, before the whole nation got impounded!

you're right. Just say no was an intensification of the Nixon war on drugs that was as damaging as it was ineffective.

Not really something to put on the lady's resume.

Out of respect for her memory, I won't say anything bad about Mrs. Reagan. But I heard she gave great blow jobs.

Sinatra would have been the one to answer that question.

Her husband used to say "Never speak ill of another Rupublican". Oh how times have changed

That seems to reflect a kind of scary mentality though...what if another republican happened to be a child molester, abusive towards their S.O and or kids, or guilty of rape? Then would he still think it inappropriate for a republican to speak ill of another republican?

AFAIC that is a sign of a dissocial mentality, an offshoot of antisocial personality disorder. many gangsters have this.

It is said that much of the time its not drugs that ruin someone's life but rather laws surrounding them. That is not to discount drug addiction but I can think of a number of examples where someones life is effectively ruined by drug laws and not effects of the drug itself. Like people still getting 20 years in prison for non-violent drug offenses...due to mandatory minimum penalties or whatever the term is. I know this kind of policy really helps out the private for profit prisons by giving them a constant supply of inmates.

I mean maybe Nancy Reagan was a nice lady in person couldn't say as I don't know anything about her personal life, but in my mind she didn't influence politics in a very good way.

That and arresting people's money for having too much cash on their person.
"Hey, if you're carrying around that much dinaro you're probably be a drug dealer. We can't prove it but we can arrest the money since it has no rights."
