Lincoln in fact changed his beliefs toward the end of his life. In the speech that had cost him his life (Boothe had been in the audience), he said blacks would be granted citizenship and voting rights.
What evidence is there that the Radical Republicans were seeking to punish the southern middle class? In fact, Ex-Confederates had brought the wrath of the federal government on themselves with bullsh*t schemes like rebranding slavery as apprenticeship in order to force blacks back into involuntary servitude, as well as committing acts of terrorism and murder against said blacks.
And how are blacks being used to bait anyone into rage, and by whom?
